Chat with my dad about house calls made me rethink my whole approach
Had a long talk with my dad last week, he's been doing HVAC in Atlanta since the 80s. He told me about the days when he'd show up to a job with just a wrench set and a handshake, no tablets, no GPS, no upfront pricing. Said he'd sometimes barter with customers, fix a unit for a home-cooked meal if money was tight back then. It hit different because I've been chasing efficiency with my scheduling app and 18 point checklist, but I lost that personal connection somewhere. He's 68 now and still gets calls from clients he served 30 years ago, and I barely remember half the houses I worked on this summer. Anyone else feel like the tech made us faster but colder with customers?
