Heat pump tune-up got me with a $150 upsell I didn't need
Called a big HVAC outfit for a routine check on my unit in Decatur and the tech pushed a UV light install for the coil, claimed it'd fix the smell that's been there for 2 summers. I told him no, grabbed the report, and called a smaller guy who said the drain pan just needs a bleach flush every few months. Has anyone else had techs pitch add-ons that seem like pure profit?
Man, that UV light pitch is everywhere now. What got me is he tied it to a smell that's been there two summers, did he even pull the pan to look at it before throwing that at you? Curious if the report he handed you listed the UV as "recommended" or "needed" because those mean two different things. Also did the smaller guy actually flush the pan while he was out, or just tell you what to do every few months?
Pulled the pan or not, that part gets me too. A smell that old could be a dry trap, buildup in the drain line, or something in the disposal, and none of that gets fixed by a UV light. Those bulbs kill stuff in the air or on the coil, not what's sitting in a pan. Check the report wording though, since "recommended" usually means optional and "needed" is them covering themselves. And if the smaller guy never actually flushed the pan, then you paid for a sales visit, not a repair.
