Shower thought: thermal paste is just the plumbing of PC building

I was swapping a CPU cooler on a client's rig in my garage last Tuesday and forgot to clean the old paste off properly. Temp spiked to 92C under load in under a minute. Had to pull the whole thing apart, hit it with 99% isopropyl, and reapply a fresh pea-sized dot of Arctic MX-4 to drop it back to 68C. Anyone else ever skip a step and watch their temps go straight to hell?

Took me 2 years to realize I was testing power supplies wrong

Been doing PC repairs since 2022, always used the paperclip trick to jump start PSUs before testing. Last week a customer brought in this old Dell that wouldn't power on, I did my usual thing with the multimeter and got solid readings. Hooked everything back up and still nothing. My buddy from the shop next door walked over and asked if I was testing under load. Turns out I was checking voltages on a dead PSU that looked fine until you actually put a motherboard on it. Anyone else have a basic habit they did wrong for way too long?

Is the 50/30/20 rule really a win for everyone or just a trap for people in expensive cities?

Last month in Austin, I tried following that popular 50/30/20 budget where you put half on needs, 30% on wants, and 20% to savings, but my rent alone ate up 45% of my income. My friend in rural Ohio swears by it and says it saved her $6,000 in a year, but she pays $800 for a two-bedroom while I pay $1,600 for a studio. Do you folks think the rule works better for some areas than others, or is it more about tweaking the percentages to fit your actual situation?

DAE think the moon landing faked footage theory falls apart when you look at the shadows?

Honestly, I was at a buddy's house in Phoenix last night and we got into it about Apollo 11. He's convinced the whole thing was staged, kept pointing to that weird flag waving. But I pulled up the shadow angles from the actual photos and compared them to his 'studio' theory. Ngl, the shadows from multiple sources all point the same direction, which doesn't happen with spotlights. How do believers explain that without saying everything was CGI in 1969?

Overheard a welder at the Tractor Supply in Decatur say he anneals his steel with a propane torch before bending

I was grabbing some 5160 leaf spring stock last weekend and some old timer next to me said he always hits his bends with a torch first to avoid stress cracks. I've been cold bending my spring steel for 3 years and wondered why I kept snapping pieces. Tried it on a set of hooks last night and it worked way better. Anyone else do this or is there a better temp to aim for?

I finally stopped buying expensive bread and started making my own

For years I spent around $5 a loaf on that fancy sourdough from the bakery section. My budget was getting hammered, like $30 a month just on bread. Last month I bought a $3 bag of flour and a packet of yeast, total cost like $4. Now I make two loaves a week for pennies and they taste way better fresh out of the oven. The trick for me was just starting simple with a basic white bread recipe from a blog I found. Anyone else switch to homemade and see a big drop in their grocery bill?

Old timer at the shop taught me a trick with a penny

So I was running a Haas VF-2 last Tuesday and kept getting chatter on a aluminum part, couldn't figure out why. This old guy named Joe who's been doing this since the 80s walks over and hands me a penny, tells me to put it under the part before clamping. Honestly I thought he was messing with me, but he showed me how it absorbs vibration and evens out the hold. Has anyone else tried something like that, or is there a better trick for thin stock?

Shoutout to the guy who told me to use a paint roller instead of a seam roller for glue-down carpet

I had a 1,200 square foot office job last week and my old seam roller was killing my wrist after 20 minutes. Tried a 4-inch paint roller with medium nap and it flattened those seams way faster with way less strain. Has anyone else swapped out their regular tools for weird stuff that actually works better?
