Solar install took 14 months, city permit was the real enemy

Signed the contract in January, panels finally went up this March. The utility approval alone sat in limbo for 5 months, totally unsolvable until I called my local rep. Has anyone else had permits stall this long, or am I the unlucky one?

I spent 2 years buying carbon offsets through a reputable program. Planted trees, funded solar in India, all that. My number looked great on paper. But I noticed my actual habits barely changed. Still drove my old truck to work, still flew to see family twice a year. The offsets felt like a pass to keep doing what I was doing. Then I switched to focusing on direct cuts: took the bus 3 days a week, cut one flight, insulated my attic. It was harder and slower, but my real emissions dropped by about 30%. The offsets never pushed me to change anything. I get that offsets have a place, but I think we lean on them way too much when the hard work is just doing less. Has anyone else found that direct changes stick better than buying your way out?

My rain barrel failed after 3 months and flooded my basement

I put in a 55 gallon rain barrel back in April to collect runoff from my downspout. Thought I was doing something good for the drought and my water bill. Solar panels on my roof made my neighbor furious - who's right?

Last month I finally installed a 6kW solar array on my house here in Columbus. My neighbor across the street, this older guy named Bill, came over and said I was 'ruining the neighborhood look' and that solar panels are just 'government hype.' I told him I calculated my payback at around 8 years with the tax credits and I'd save about $1,200 a year. He said I was just bragging and that the panels would lower his property value. I get that aesthetics matter to some people, but shouldn't we prioritize actually doing something for the planet? What do you all think - is it selfish to put panels up if your neighbors hate the look?
