TIL that old wives tale about putting a penny in a vase of flowers actually works

My grandma swore by it for years and I always rolled my eyes. Last month my tulips were drooping after 2 days so I tossed a 1982 penny in the water out of desperation. They perked up and lasted a full 9 days. Anyone else had random grandma hacks turn out to be legit?

Saw a huge Venus flytrap at a greenhouse in Asheville last weekend

Honestly, I stopped by this little botanical garden off the Blue Ridge Parkway and they had a section of carnivorous plants. One Venus flytrap had traps the size of a quarter, which I've never seen before outside of pictures. The guy working there said they feed them bloodworms once a month to keep them that big. Has anyone else seen monster flytraps like that or is this place just special?

Just realized co-working spaces aren't for me after trying one for 3 weeks

I've been working from coffee shops and my van for 2 years, but last month I got a trial pass at WeWork in Austin. Thought it would be all networking and free coffee, but man, the noise was worse than a coffee shop somehow. People taking calls right next to me, constant chatty vibes. I went back to using my van with a mobile hotspot after 3 days. Saved myself $299 a month. Does anyone else just prefer working from their car or a quiet library instead of those trendy spaces?

Rant: Suction line clogged on a job in Biloxi

I was running the 12-inch cutterhead down near the Biloxi channel and suddenly the vacuum dropped to nothing. Spent 45 minutes kicking the suction line before I realized a busted piece of timber had wedged itself in the intake. Had to shut down for two hours to winch it out with a grapple. Anybody got a trick for checking the intake without going in the water?

Overheard a kid at Starbucks say 'nobody stays at a job 5 years anymore'

I was waiting for my latte last Tuesday and this young guy on his phone said that to someone. It hit me because I just hit 12 years at the same company back in March. My first job out of high school I stayed 7 years and my dad worked for the same factory for 31 years until it closed. Makes me wonder if that kind of loyalty is gone for good or if the jobs just don't get treated the same way anymore. Has anyone else noticed younger coworkers jumping ship way faster than we used to?

Just dropped $900 on a used injector puller set - not sure if i got burned

I picked up a OTC 7050 injector puller set off a guy near Nashville for $900 cash. Looked barely used but after pulling three 6.7 Powerstroke injectors with it, I'm wondering if I should have just rented one from the parts store instead. The slide hammer feels a bit sloppy on the last one, maybe it's just me but does anyone else think these kits get overpriced on the used market?

Warning: Ditch the cheap rasps and get a Nichols or else you'll regret it after the third horse

I switched to a Nichols rasp after fighting with a $12 hardware store rasp that kept glazing over and taking forever to finish the hoof, and the difference in speed and smoothness was night and day. Has anyone else noticed how fast the cheap ones lose their bite?

Disagree about the rose garden at Butchart...

Everyone raves about the Sunken Garden at Butchart, but I actually found the rose garden way more impressive. The scent from over 3,500 rose bushes hit me before I even got close to the entrance. Am I alone in thinking the roses steal the show?

My sister laughed at my bread and told me it looked like a sad potato.

Last Tuesday I pulled my first sourdough loaf out of the oven and was so proud. It was flat and lopsided but it smelled good you know? My sister walked in, pointed at it, and said 'what is that, a sad potato?' She was joking but man it stung. I told her to taste it first before judging and she actually did and said it was delicious. Has anyone else had a family member roast your bake before even trying it?

Still using twist-on connectors after 15 years, not a fan of push-ins

I know everyone in my local IBEW crew swears by Wagos for speed, but I stick with wire nuts on residential jobs. Had a push-in connector fail on a ceiling fan install last spring and it cost me a callback. Why risk a loose connection just to save 10 seconds?
