My brother told me my floating monitor mount was a $30 mistake waiting to happen, so I redid it with a $12 cleat
I built a floating monitor arm setup last October using two L brackets from Harbor Freight and some drywall anchors I had in a drawer, and it held fine for about 4 months. My brother, who does trim carpentry, came over and pointed out the anchors were only biting into drywall and there was maybe 1/2 inch of actual stud behind them. He said one good bump would pull the whole thing down and take my monitor with it. So I pulled it apart and remounted the whole thing on a 2x4 cleat screwed into two studs, then attached the arm to that, which cost me $12 in wood and lag screws. Now I'm wondering if I should have just gone with a wall mount kit or if the cleat is the way to go for anything heavy.
