That $30 fuel pressure test kit from the parts store actually held up
Last month a 2012 Cummins came in with a long crank and no codes, and I was about to tell the guy he needed a $400 injector. A buddy kept telling me to stop guessing and just buy the cheap test kit off the shelf at the store on Industrial Blvd. I figured it would leak or read wrong, but it held 60 psi steady and the gauge matched my shop gauge within 2 psi, which was enough to point me at the filter housing instead of the pump. Turned out to be a clogged filter screen the owner never changed, and he drove out of here for $85 total instead of four figures. Does anyone else run the cheap kits as a first pass, or am I inviting trouble down the road?
