Paid $240 for a chimney sweep and they just moved the creosote around
The sweep in Decatur spent 20 minutes, showed me a mirror photo, and charged me $240, but my fireplace still smoked up the living room last week. Anyone else get burned by those quick chimney inspection packages?
That line about "just moved the creosote around" is funny but also kind of the whole problem. A real sweep has to get the stuff out of the flue, not brush it down onto the smoke shelf and call it a day. Here's the angle nobody brings up: your smoking problem might have nothing to do with the flue at all. If the sweep only ran a brush and never checked your chimney cap, the screen on top could be clogged with leaves or a bird nest, and that backs smoke right into the room no matter how clean the pipe is. Twenty minutes tells me they never went on the roof. Get someone who climbs up there and looks at the cap and the smoke chamber before you pay another dime.
