Found out property taxes can jump 40% after your first year

Actually you might want to double check that Zillow number because they're not always accurate with tax estimates. The county assessor usually shows the CURRENT owner's tax rate and not what it will reassess to after a sale. That 40% jump sounds rough but it's pretty standard when a house sells after being held for a long time under an older tax assessment.

Pro tip: Stop rinsing your dishes before they go in the dishwasher

Same here. I was rinsing everything for years and my glasses always looked cloudy. Stopped doing it and now everything comes out way cleaner.

Spent 20 minutes at the DMV watching people type passwords in plain sight

Did any of them seem to enter their actual full passwords in public?

Switched from throwing away vegetable scraps to composting them 6 months ago and now my trash only goes out once every two weeks instead of twice a week.

Yeah my dad started doing this with his coffee grounds and banana peels, next thing I know he's trying to compost old socks and pizza boxes. His garden's a mess now but at least he's saving like ten bucks a month on garbage bags.

TIL the hard way that moisture readings on concrete can be misleading

Oh man, that's close but not exactly right. RH tests actually measure the moisture in the pores of the concrete, which is deeper than what calcium chloride tests catch, sure. But the thing is, RH tests aren't necessarily more accurate overall. They give different info. Calcium chloride measures how much moisture is actually leaving the slab, which is what matters for most floor coverings. RH tests can give you readings that are technically high but the surface might be fine to work with, especially if the slab has been curing properly. So you gotta know what you're looking for.
