That "lasted 3 days then sprayed everywhere" part got me because I did the same dumb thing with a garden hose splitter last summer. Wrapped it in like half a roll of the gray stuff, felt like a genius for about a day and a half. Then I came out one morning and my whole side yard was a swamp and the wife was standing there with her arms crossed. Tape works great when there's no real pressure behind it, it's just a bandage for something calm. The second water is actively pushing at a joint, that tape turns into a wet noodle and gives up. For a pressurized line you need to actually fix the joint, not dress it up.

Ran into the same mess on a silver Tacoma bed last fall, tape lifted the sealer right at the body line after a day in the sun. What worked for me was 8 to 10 seconds with the heat gun set low, maybe 200 degrees, and I keep the nozzle moving so I don't cook the paint. Then I press the edge down with a plastic squeegee while it's still warm and let it sit a minute before I spray. Pull it at a slow 45 degree angle and the edge comes off clean almost every time. Cheap tape still fights you though, so I quit buying the no name stuff.
