TIL driveway sealer needs 48 hours of dry weather, not 24

I used to seal my blacktop in the fall without checking the forecast, figured one clear day was plenty. Then a neighbor in Raleigh told me he lost a whole $200 job because it rained on day two, so I looked it up on the county extension site. Turns out most latex sealers need 48 hours of temps above 50 and zero rain to really cure, and I'd been cutting it close every single time. Anyone else find out the hard way that the label's '24 hours to dry' is just the surface tack time?

The old timer who watched me pour cold patch and just shook his head

Two summers ago I was filling a big crack near the curb, using one of those 50 pound bags of cold patch from the hardware store. The bag said no primer needed, so I just dumped it in and tamped it down. An older guy walking his dog stopped and watched me for a minute, then said, "You're gonna be redoing that by October." He explained that cold patch needs a tack coat or at least a good wire brushing and some wetting, otherwise it pops right out. I thought he was just being a know-it-all. Sure enough, that patch crumbled out before the leaves fell. I had to chip it all out and do it again with his method. That time it held through two winters. Has anyone else had a random neighbor or passerby give them driveway advice that actually worked better than the label instructions?

My asphalt patch turned white after one hard winter, watch out for this

Last November I filled a 4 foot crack with standard cold patch near my garage in Columbus, Ohio. By March the patch had faded to a chalky light gray while the real driveway stayed dark black. I think the cold patch had too much limestone filler, it just did not hold up to salt and freeze thaw cycles. Anyone else see their patch discolor this fast, or did I pick the wrong product type for my climate?

Paid $180 for a rubberized crack filler, still cracked by spring. Anyone else got burned?

I tried that expensive self-leveling rubberized crack filler on my blacktop last October, after reading all the rave reviews online. It looked perfect for about 3 months, then the big joint by my garage door opened right back up, wider than before. My neighbor swears by the cheap cold-pour stuff from the local hardware store, says it flexes better in our freeze-thaw cycles here in Ohio. I'm thinking about trying the hot-pour method with a rented kettle next time, but I'd like to hear if anyone's had luck with one approach over the other for wide cracks.

Saw a guy patching his driveway with ramen noodles in Phoenix

I was visiting my sister in Phoenix last week and some dude in her neighborhood was on his knees filling a giant crack with instant ramen. Not even the good kind, just the cheap square packs. He said it was a hack he saw online and it would hold until he could afford real patch. I laughed until I realized my own driveway has a crack that's been sitting there for 8 months. Has anyone actually tried the ramen thing or is this just another internet joke that ruins your blacktop?

He waited until I finished the whole bag in a drizzle, then said 'you just sealed water into that crack,' and sure enough it popped back out four days later, so now I check the forecast for 72 hours of dry before I even mix a bucket, has anyone else had a repair fail because of a surprise shower?

Hot patch vs cold patch on my cracked apron, cold won by a mile

Last fall I filled a 4 foot crack near the street with hot patch from a bag I warmed up, but it crumbled out by March. This spring I tried the cold patch in the bucket, packed it down with a 2x4 and some gravel dust, and it's still holding after a heavy rain. The hot stuff felt like it never bonded to the edges, just sat there like a loose tooth. Anyone else have better luck with one over the other, or am I missing something about how to prep the crack?

Crack filler vs cold patch, neighbor told me I was doing it wrong

My neighbor Ron watched me filling a 12 foot crack in my driveway last weekend and straight up said I was wasting my time with the pourable crack filler. He swears by the bagged cold patch stuff you shovel in and tamp down, even for narrow cracks. I argued that the liquid stuff self levels and gets into every little gap, but he pointed at my last repair from 8 months ago and said it was already crumbling. His driveway is 20 years old and he only ever uses cold patch, and his is still solid. So which is actually better for the long haul, or does it just depend on the climate? Anyone else had a neighbor or old timer tell them a totally different method than what the internet says?

Wasted $220 on a heat gun that melted my asphalt patch job

Back in March I bought this industrial heat gun from a big box store in Akron thinking it'd speed up crack sealing. I got so confident I used it on a cold morning patch, and it turned the whole area into a sticky mess that took me 3 hours to scrape off. I finally fixed a corner crack that kept coming back for 5 summers

Was filling the same hairline crack on my driveway corner every spring, it never held past July. Last week I saw a comment on an asphalt forum from some guy in Ohio, he said most people fill too shallow, you gotta dig out 3 inches deep and use a backer rod before the crack filler. I thought that was just for concrete. But I tried it on Saturday, dug it all out with a flathead and a shop vac, shoved a 1/2 inch backer rod in there, then used the self leveling stuff. Took about 2 hours total for an 8 foot section. It feels solid already, not like the usual thin skim I'd just glob on top. Anyone else ever go deeper than the crack itself and actually solve it for good, or am I just fooling myself again?

Poured cold patch in the rain, finally learned to wait it out

Three years ago I filled a big pothole in my driveway in Pittsburgh during a drizzle because I was sick of looking at it. The water mixed into the mix and it crumbled out within a month. Last week I waited two days for the ground to dry, used a bag of Quikrete crack filler, and tamped it down hard with a 2x4. Cold patch vs hot mix for winter cracks - which side are you on?

Last month I patched a 6 foot crack in my driveway with cold patch from Lowe's and it was gone after the first freeze. My neighbor says I should have used hot mix even though it's a pain to work with. He's been doing his own driveway for 20 years and swears hot mix lasts 3 times longer. But cold patch took me 15 minutes and I didn't need a torch or special tools. I'm trying to decide if I should redo it now or wait and see if it holds through spring. Anyone else have strong feelings about which one actually works?

Learned the hard way that cold tar crack filler is a scam in winter

I spent $45 on a tub of that cold applied tar crack filler last November here in Buffalo. Step by step, I cleaned out the cracks, heated the tube in warm water like the instructions said, and applied it on a 45 degree day. It looked fine for about a week, then we got a freeze and the stuff just popped right out of every crack. Warning: That guy from Biggs Hardware told me to use sand instead of crack filler on a deep split

My neighbor Bob said to just shovel sand into a 3/4 inch crack and pour sealer over it, claiming it worked for his dad's driveway in Texas for 20 years. I tried it last spring and now that entire section is sinking into a 6 inch trough because water pooled underneath and washed it all out. Has anyone else had a supposed "old timer" trick completely ruin their driveway patch job?

Neighbor told me I was priming wrong on my asphalt patch

Last spring I patched this big crack in my driveway near Akron and it flaked off in like 3 months. My neighbor Steve came over and said I was skipping the tack coat step before pouring the patch mix. Last Tuesday was my best crack repair day in months

I was working on this old driveway in Brookline that had this giant 8 foot crack running from the garage pad all the way down. The weather was perfect, like 72 degrees and dry, so I got the whole thing cleaned out with my angle grinder in about 20 minutes. Poured in two bags of the Quikrete vinyl patch and it actually set up smooth without any of that crumbling mess.
