Tried using a digital angle finder on a job in Phoenix last month and my 45 degree cuts came out all wrong.

Turns out the battery was low and it was giving me bad readings, threw off a whole row of soffits before I double-checked with my old speed square. Anyone else had their digital tools mess up on them like that?

Got a weird board error from a vintage Pioneer receiver from 1978

Last month I picked up a Pioneer SX-780 from a garage sale in Austin. It powered on but the left channel was completely dead. After poking around with my multimeter I found a cracked solder joint on the main amp board near a big resistor. Fixed it with a quick reflow and now it sounds perfect. Has anyone else run into cracked joints on these old silver face receivers?

Chasing a squeak under engineered hardwood for 2 hours...

I had this job last week in a condo near downtown. Finished laying 800 sq ft of engineered and right when we cleaned up, every step near the kitchen let out this awful squeak. Pulled up three boards, rechecked the subfloor screws, nothing loose. Turns out it was a tiny high spot in the concrete underneath where the old tile was. Took 2 hours of grinding it down with a cup wheel and relaying those boards to fix. Has anyone else run into hidden slab issues that drove them nuts?

Question about using a power stretcher on tight stair landings

I had a job last week in an old house near downtown. The landing at the top of the stairs was barely 3 feet wide and I couldn't get my power stretcher to fit right. I tried using a knee kicker instead and the carpet came out just fine. But now I'm wondering if I should have forced it with a smaller head attachment. Has anyone else had luck with a different approach on those awkward landings?

Just found a free solid wood desk on the curb near the park on Elm Street

I was walking my dog last night around 7pm and spotted this big old desk sitting out with a "free" sign taped to it. It's real wood, not that particle board stuff. I had to call my brother to help me load it into his truck because it weighs a ton. Now I'm wondering - what's the best way to check for bed bugs or other creepy crawlies before I bring it inside? Anyone else pick up curb furniture and regret not checking first?

Found a cheaper parts supplier after my usual one messed up an order for a fleet of delivery vans in Nashville

Last Tuesday my regular supplier sent the wrong brake calipers for three Ford Transits, and I called around until I found a local warehouse in Franklin that had the right ones in stock for 15% less, has anyone else switched suppliers after a screw-up like that?

Took me 3 hours to find a stud behind my bathroom tile because I kept hitting a pipe

Bought a cheap stud finder from Home Depot and it kept going off on the pex tubing behind the shower wall, wasted a whole Saturday afternoon before my dad told me to just use a magnet. Has anyone else had a stud finder betray them like that?

I finally understood why my inspector kept touching every outlet

Last week during a walkthrough in Denver, the seller's agent got annoyed at my inspector for testing every single outlet in the house. Turned out three of them in the kitchen were wired backwards, which could've fried my new fridge. Did anyone else's inspector find weird electrical stuff that seemed small but saved you big later?

PSA: I saw a clever way to hide a cable run at the library

They ran the power cord for a floor lamp behind a baseboard that had a small gap. They just used a few clear adhesive clips to keep it tucked in, and you can't see it at all. Has anyone tried something similar for TV cords?

I finally got why my drawer fronts always felt a little off

I was having coffee with a guy who does museum restoration work, and he asked me how I set my reveal gaps. I told him I just eye it with a nickel for spacing, like my old boss taught me. He said, 'Forget the coin, try a playing card. It's 0.010 inches thinner and your eye will see the difference even if your tape won't.' I tried it on a vanity I'm building, and man, he was right. That tiny change made the whole piece look way more crisp and even. Has anyone else found a simple trick that fixed a long-standing habit?
