Guy running the pump truck at the Tempe site said my old rig had more feel in the boom than the new joystick ones
He was half joking while we waited on a concrete truck, but it stuck with me for the rest of the day. He said the older cable control cranes let you feel the load in your hands, and now with the electro-hydraulic joysticks everything is smooth but you lose that feedback. I ran a 90s Grove for about 8 years before we got the newer Liebherr, and I have to admit he has a point. On the old machine I could tell when the boom was getting close to max just from the way the levers pushed back at me, and now I watch the load chart screen instead. It is safer, no question, but there is a little gut instinct that got dulled. I still catch myself easing off the stick by feel and then glancing at the readout just to confirm. Any of you who moved from cable controls to the new joystick setups, did it take a while to trust the screen over your hands?
