Walked into a library book club and nobody had read the book

Stopped by the downtown library last Tuesday for their monthly book club. Sat in on the discussion. Only one person out of eight had actually finished the novel. Everyone else just watched the movie adaptation and talked about that. Is this normal for public library clubs or did I just hit a bad night?

Just realized our book club has been reading the same type of book for 2 years

After our last meeting, someone pointed out that 8 of our last 10 picks were all thrillers or mysteries, and I hadn't even noticed. We thought we were mixing it up but we were stuck in a rut the whole time. Has anyone else's book club fallen into a genre loop without realizing, and how did you break out of it?

Finally finished 'The Brothers Karamazov' after 8 months of starting and stopping

Kept losing the thread of who was talking in those long speeches, but I pushed through the last 200 pages this weekend and now I'm just sitting here wondering how my book club is gonna handle that whole 'who really did it' debate... anyone else struggle to finish a classic like that?

Our book club spent 2 hours arguing about whether the main character was actually dead the whole time

Last month we read a thriller where the narrator describes their own funeral in detail. Half the group was dead sure (pun intended) it meant the narrator was a ghost or in purgatory. The other half pointed to a throwaway line on page 247 about a medical condition that could explain visions. I ended up staying up until 2 AM rereading chapters to find evidence for my side. In the end we voted and it was 6 to 5 in favor of the ghost theory. Has anyone else had a book club debate get this heated over an ambiguous ending?

Hit 50 books read this year and it caught me off guard

Ngl, I was just keeping track in a notebook since January and hit exactly 50 books last night with a memoir I grabbed off the library hold shelf. Halfway through I realized I'd already crossed that number back in November without even noticing. Anyone else suddenly hit a reading milestone that made them rethink how much time they actually spend escaping into stories?

TIL I was reading book club books completely wrong for 6 months

I've been in my local book club for about half a year now, and every month I'd feel totally lost during the debates. Everyone else was talking about themes and symbolism while I was just recapping the plot. Last Tuesday, after our discussion of a mystery novel, I admitted I never read the author's note or the discussion questions at the back of the book. My friend Jane stared at me and said, 'Wait, you know those are for us, right?' Turns out the whole time I thought those pages were just bonus filler for people who wanted extra material. Tried reading a 'classic' on a road trip and it backfired big time

So last month I decided to finally read Moby Dick during a 10 hour drive from Austin to Amarillo. I figured, hey, it's a classic, I'll look smart at book club. By hour three I was fighting to stay awake with all the whale blubber details. My buddy in the passenger seat started reading over my shoulder and fell asleep too. We missed the exit for a rest stop because we were both zoning out. When I got to book club, I couldn't even explain the plot because I'd skimmed half the chapters. Has anyone else picked the wrong book for a road trip and regretted it?

Am I the only one who hated the ending of 'The Goldfinch'?

My book club met last Tuesday at the Coffee Bean on 4th Street, and everyone was raving about how the ending wrapped things up nicely. I sat there feeling like the whole final section where Theo ends up in Amsterdam felt rushed and fake compared to the gritty middle of the book. Has anyone else felt like an author copped out with a happy ending that didn't match the rest of the story?

That one Tuesday our book club argued about who 'owns' a story

I'm the one who thinks the author's intent actually matters more than reader interpretation. Our book club read 'The Silent Patient' last month, and everyone was saying the ending is about betrayal. But I read an interview where the author flat out said it's about self-forgiveness. I brought that up at our Tuesday meeting at Sarah's house, and three people got really defensive. Spent $75 on a fancy reading guide for our club and it was a total waste

Our group was reading this dense historical novel and I got talked into buying this special guide that promised deeper analysis and discussion questions. It cost about seventy five bucks and I figured it would help me lead the talk. Honestly, it just gave us all the same basic stuff you could find with a quick online search, but with a lot of extra fluff. The questions it suggested were so obvious they killed the debate before it started, like asking 'how did the setting affect the mood' when we wanted to argue about the main character's choices. I felt pretty dumb for spending that much. Now I just make my own notes and we have way better fights, I mean talks. Has anyone else bought a book club aid that just fell flat?

I thought our club's rule about reading the book twice was a total waste of time

Our group in Seattle has this rule where you read the book once, discuss it, then read it again before the final debate. I thought it was pointless busywork for the first 6 months I was a member. Then we did it with 'The Remains of the Day' and I caught so many subtle hints about the butler's past on the second pass that I completely missed. My whole argument about his character changed because I noticed a repeated phrase about light in three different chapters. Now I'm a believer. Why does every book club I've been in rush through the last 20 pages?

We spent 90 minutes last Tuesday arguing about the main character's motivation in chapter 7, but when we got to the actual ending, our moderator just said 'so, what did everyone think?' and moved on. Our group in Austin was stuck for weeks because we all wanted different genres. I suggested we each pitch a book with a one-sentence 'sell' and then vote blind, no titles shown. I was sure the whole debate would be over in like 10 minutes, but half the club thought the ending was perfect and the other half thought it was a total cop-out. Unpopular opinion: I thought our club's 'Catcher in the Rye' fight was just people being loud.
