Figured out I was wasting time on those torque stick things

For years I swore by torque sticks for lug nuts. Seemed like a no-brainer shortcut. Then I checked 20 wheels on a fleet of Ford Transits with a click-style torque wrench and found 11 were under 80 ft-lbs, some as low as 60. I tossed the sticks that same day. Anybody else ditch a tool after realizing it was just making extra work?

The muffler guy on 3rd Street told me to replace the whole exhaust system but I went with a patch kit instead.

Saved $180 on the patch kit last March, but the rattle came back after 4 months so I ended up paying $600 for the full job anyway. Has anyone else learned that lesson the hard way?

Switched to synthetic oil at 180k miles and the old engine runs worse now

I had a 2005 Silverado with 178k miles on it, ran on conventional 10w30 its whole life. Last month my buddy who works at a Jiffy Lube kept pushing me to swap to synthetic, said it was better for high mileage engines. I finally gave in at 180k miles. Within 2 weeks it started leaking oil from what looks like the rear main seal area. Never had a drop before. Now I'm wondering if the synthetic cleaned out all the old sludge that was plugging up the gaps. I'm thinking about draining it and going back to conventional. Has anyone else seen this happen on an older engine?

Thought I was too smart for torque wrenches, got humbled real fast

Finally got someone's attention and he acted like looking up a part number was brain surgery. Anyone else given up on dealer parts counters and just go to Napa or RockAuto now?

Had to choose between using ramps or jack stands on a BMW 5 series yesterday

I went with the ramps because I was feeling lazy but the front bumper scraped the whole way up and now I've got a 3 inch scratch I have to explain to the owner, has anyone else had a ramp disaster like that?

I’ve always used conventional oil in my 1997 F-150 because I figured synthetics would cause leaks in a high-mileage motor. This old guy, must have been 70, told me he switched his 80s Ford to synthetic at 180,000 miles and it ran another 100,000 without a single drip. He said the real problem is cheap gaskets, not the oil itself. I put in synthetic last weekend and so far no leaks. Has anyone else had luck with this on older trucks?
