PSA: That $50 Amazon "creative writing workbook" was a total scam

Picked up some workbook from a random publisher called WordCraft Labs for 50 bucks, thinking it would have fresh prompts and exercises. Instead it was just 200 pages of "write about a door" and "describe a sunset" with zero actual teaching or structure. I only did three prompts before I tossed it in the recycling. Has anyone else fallen for one of those cheap self-published workbooks that look professional?

PSA: That free antivirus might be selling your browsing data

I used to think free antivirus was fine until I read a privacy report from EFF.org last month that showed how one popular free program was tracking and selling user data to advertisers. Switched to the built-in Windows Defender and a browser extension instead. Anyone else dig into what their 'free' security tools are actually doing?

Turns out using a water pan in my smoker was killing my bark

I read a post on AmazingRibs.com last week that said water pans keep the humidity too high for good bark formation, especially in the first 4 hours. So I skipped it on my last brisket cook and finally got that deep, dark crust I've been chasing for years. Has anyone else noticed a big difference by leaving the water pan out?

Had to pick between fixing a leaky antenna or a bad connector on a 737 yesterday

I chose the antenna because it looked worse, but then the connector completely crumbled when I touched it. 2 hours later and I was covered in sealant with a weird cramp in my index finger. Anyone else ever guess wrong and pay for it double?

TIL a trick at Anime Expo that fixed my subtitles issue

At Anime Expo last summer I was watching a panel where they played a clip with subs that were all jumbled up. The guy running the projector said he just re-synced them by adjusting the delay in VLC by 2.3 seconds. I tried it on a crunchyroll rip I had with laggy subs and it actually worked perfectly. Has anyone else had to mess with subtitle timing to save a bad fansub?

Shoutout to the guy who told me to paint my fence with a paint sprayer instead of a roller

I spent two full weekends last summer rolling my backyard fence with a brush and roller. My arms ached like crazy and I only got through half of it before I gave up. Then a neighbor walked by and said just rent a sprayer from Home Depot for $60 a day. I thought it was gonna be a mess but I finally tried it this past Saturday. Taped up some plastic over the plants and went for it. Finished the whole fence in like 3 hours and it looks way smoother than the brushed parts. Has anyone else found a tool that totally changed how long a chore takes?

I finally hit 50 nights in my tent this year and it felt way bigger than I expected

Honestly, I just wanted to get out more after a rough spring, so I started tallying nights on a sticky note in my truck, and somehow hitting that 50 mark last weekend made me realize I actually stuck with something for once instead of burning out by June.

Kept stripping bits left and right until my buddy Tim at the hardware shop said to just give it a light snug instead of cranking it like a jar lid. Has anyone else wrecked a dozen phillips heads before realizing this trick?

After 3 years I finally ditched my pre-cut studs for a circular saw

Last weekend I was framing a 8x10 shed for my neighbor Dave in Portland and kept fighting with studs that were 1/4 inch too long or short. Pre-cut studs at Home Depot cost me $4.50 each but I spent an hour shimming every single one. Switched to cutting my own from 16 footers and saved $35 on the whole job plus the walls actually sit plumb now. Anyone else find that pre-cut lumber creates more problems than it solves?

Surprised by how much heat a single hen puts out in winter

I was reading a poultry extension article from Ohio State last night and found out a single hen gives off about 10 watts of heat. That is like having a small space heater running in the coop. I always figured they just huddled together for comfort, not for actual warmth. Has anyone else measured their coop temperature with and without birds in it?
