Dropped $500 on a career coach in Portland and I still cant tell if it helped
Back in January I paid a career coach $500 for a package of four sessions because I was stuck and sick of being stuck. She had good reviews, worked with people in my field, seemed legit. The first call was mostly her asking me what I wanted and me giving rambling answers that made no sense, which honestly was probably the point. By session three she had me rewrite my resume and practice saying what I do out loud without apologizing for it, and that part was worth something. But the last call she just sent me a list of job boards and said good luck, and I sat there feeling like I paid $125 for a stranger to hand me a Google result. I did land two interviews since then, though I cant prove the coach had anything to do with it. For anyone who paid for coaching, did the last session feel like a cliff drop too?
Get why that last session stung. You spend weeks building up this momentum and then she just dumps a list of job boards on you and waves goodbye. That is not coaching at that point, that is a link dump. My sister did a similar thing and her last call was basically the coach saying you got this, which felt like paying someone to hang up on her. The resume work and the not apologizing thing do sound real though. Two interviews is two more than you had, so maybe the money did something even if the ending felt flat. The cliff drop thing seems to be how these packages are built, they front load the value and then cut you loose.
