Coworking spaces in Chiang Mai keep playing music way too loud

I've been to three different spots this month and every single one has a speaker blasting EDM at 11am. I asked the staff at one to turn it down and they looked at me like I complained about free coffee. Am I the only one who needs silence to actually get work done?

Tried that "soundproof" hostel pod and ended up hearing EVERYTHING anyway

Booked a 3 night stay at a supposedly "quiet" pod hostel in Lisbon last month. Paid $42 a night for the premium one with the soundproofing panels. First night, the guy in the pod next to me snored like a chainsaw AND I could hear the street noise through the damn window. The panels are basically cardboard with foam glued on. Learned that real soundproofing costs way more than that, and now I just bring good earplugs and a white noise app. Anyone found a hostel that actually delivers on quiet rooms?

Rant: I was dead wrong about coworking spaces for 2 years

I used to think coworking spaces were a waste of money. Why pay $200 a month when I can work from a cafe in Chiang Mai for the price of a coffee? Then I spent 3 months bouncing between loud hostels and spotty wifi spots. Last week I finally caved and tried a space near Nimman, and I got more done in 5 hours than the entire week before. Picked Chiang Mai over Medellin for my first 6 months as a nomad

When I finally quit my desk job in March, I had two choices for where to base myself: Chiang Mai, Thailand or Medellin, Colombia. Everyone online talks about both as top spots. I went with Chiang Mai mainly because of the time zone difference for my client work on US East Coast hours. Being 11 hours ahead meant I could work early mornings and have my evenings free. Six months in, I can honestly say it worked out well. The cost of living here is around 800 dollars a month for a nice studio and food. Coworking spaces are everywhere and the internet is solid. Has anyone else faced this same choice and picked the opposite? How did Medellin treat you?

I was spending $12 a day on coffee at cafes just to use the wifi. The library was free, silent, and had plugs everywhere. Anyone else found a cheap alternative that actually works better?

Lost my Airbnb Wi-Fi in Portugal and had to work from a bakery

I was in Lisbon last month and my host's router died on a Wednesday morning. I had three client calls that day and no backup plan. I grabbed my laptop and walked to a bakery down the street that had a sign saying free Wi-Fi. Turns out their connection was slow and I had to use my phone as a hotspot for the bigger calls. I burned through 4GB of data in two hours because I forgot to download my files offline first. Now I keep a prepaid SIM card from Vodafone in my bag at all times. Anyone else had to scramble for internet in a foreign city? What's your backup plan when the Wi-Fi goes down?

Just found out coworking space fees add up to more than my rent in Chiang Mai

I was scrolling through my expense tracker last night and got a shock. I spend about $350 a month on coworking memberships here in Chiang Mai. My apartment rent is only $300 a month. How did I not notice this sooner lol. I guess I just figured it was part of the digital nomad life tax. But seriously, I could work from cafes for way less and save that cash for actual fun stuff. Has anyone else run the numbers on their workspace costs and felt dumb about it? I'm thinking of switching to a cheaper spot or just rotating cafes. What do you all do to keep expenses low?

Overheard a guy in a coworking space say 'location independence is a myth'

I was working out of a hub in Medellin last month and caught two guys arguing at the next table. One said being a digital nomad is just 'fancy homelessness' because you never build real roots or community. The other one fired back saying that's exactly the point - you get to choose your environment on a weekly basis. It got me thinking because I've been doing this 18 months now and I've definitely felt both sides. Some weeks I love waking up in a new city, other weeks I miss just having a regular coffee shop where the barista knows my order. So which is it - are we building a better life or just running from settling down? Has anyone else felt that pull between freedom and stability?

Coworking spaces or coffee shops? I think one is way overrated.

Been bouncing around Southeast Asia for 8 months now. Hit coworking spaces in Bangkok and coffee shops in Chiang Mai. Coworking spaces are loud, cramped, and cost $15 a day for a plastic chair. Coffee shops you buy one $2 latte and get free wifi for hours. Which side actually works better for getting work done?

Hit my 50th country last week in Uzbekistan and it felt weirdly empty

I mean, I've been doing the digital nomad thing for about 6 years now, bouncing around with my laptop and a small backpack. Last Tuesday I landed in Tashkent and realized it was the 50th country I've worked from. I thought hitting that number would feel like a big accomplishment, but honestly it just felt kind of lonely. I grabbed dinner at a little place near my hostel and realized I didn't have anyone to celebrate with because all my friends are scattered across different time zones. The wifi was actually pretty solid there though, which surprised me. Has anyone else hit some random travel milestone and just felt...meh about it?

I was grabbing coffee at this place near the old city and overheard a guy talking to his friend. He said he pays $150 a month for a desk, which sounds like a lot when you can just work from a cafe for the price of a $3 latte. But then he broke it down. He said between the unreliable wifi at his Airbnb, buying 4 or 5 coffees a day to justify sitting there, and the noise, he was losing like 3 hours of productive time every day. He figured his hourly rate was around $25, so that was $75 a day in lost time. $150 a month suddenly looked like a bargain. I had always just seen the upfront cost, never thought about what I was losing by not having a proper setup. Has anyone else run the numbers on their work setup and been surprised?

Thought I'd have my visa in 2 weeks, took 5 months in Thailand

I applied for a long-term visa in Bangkok back in March, thinking the process would be quick and simple. But they kept asking for more documents like bank statements from my home bank and a letter from my landlord. It took 5 months and three trips to the immigration office before they finally approved it. Has anyone else had their visa process drag on way longer than they planned in Southeast Asia?

I've been bouncing between coworking spots for like 3 years now, paying $150-$200 a month per space. Ran into this dude named Jake at Selina who told me he just uses cafe Wi-Fi and buys one coffee for like $3. Said he saves $1,800 a year doing that. At first I thought no way, privacy and stability matter. But he showed me his setup with a portable signal booster and noise cancelling buds. Last month I tried it for 10 days in Mexico City and honestly my productivity was the same. Now I'm wondering if those coworking passes are worth it at all. Tried coworking at a library in Portland instead of a cafe

Was sick of dropping $6 on lattes just to use wifi for 3 hours, so I hit up the Multnomah County Library downtown. Turns out they have free private study rooms you can book for 2 hours at a time with way better speeds than most coffee shops. Only downside is they kick you out exactly when time's up no exceptions. I used to hate coworking spaces until last month in Bangkok

Was at a cheap cafe in Chiang Mai. Laptop got knocked off the table by some kid. Screen cracked. Fully remote with no backup. Hated the idea of paying for a desk. But coworking space in Silom had lockers and insurance. Learned my lesson the hard way. Any of you guys use coworking spots full time?

Just realized co-working spaces aren't for me after trying one for 3 weeks

I've been working from coffee shops and my van for 2 years, but last month I got a trial pass at WeWork in Austin. Thought it would be all networking and free coffee, but man, the noise was worse than a coffee shop somehow. People taking calls right next to me, constant chatty vibes. I went back to using my van with a mobile hotspot after 3 days. Saved myself $299 a month. Does anyone else just prefer working from their car or a quiet library instead of those trendy spaces?
