Spent 8 hours on a simple drawer front alignment

I was building a kitchen set for a client in Portland and thought I could get all 12 drawer fronts aligned in under 2 hours. Took me the whole afternoon because the slides had just enough slop to shift everything sideways. Ended up shimming each one individually and checking with a straightedge. Has anyone else found a faster way to deal with loose undermount slides?

Soft-close hinges were a waste of money in my book until a customer pointed something out

I always ran standard euro hinges on my kitchen cabinets because soft-close seemed like an upsell gimmick. But last month a friend of mine had me over after I installed her set, and she just kept saying how nice it was not hearing doors slam at 6am when she grabs coffee. Now I offer them as a standard on every job, costs me like $3 more per hinge.

Took me 3 hours to figure out a drawer slide that was off by 1/8 inch

Measured three times, cut once, still had a drawer that wouldn't close right. Ended up shimming the back rail and it took less than 5 minutes to fix once I stopped being stubborn.

Switched from pre-finished to raw plywood for my last kitchen job and the difference was night and day

I used to always go with pre-finished maple plywood because it saved time. But on a job last month in Denver, the client wanted a specific stain color so I had to go raw. Honestly, the raw stuff let me sand out all the minor imperfections before finishing, and the final result looked way cleaner. The pre-finished boards always had those tiny scratches from shipping that bugged me. Has anyone else noticed a big quality gap between pre-finished and raw for stain grade work?

Had a cleanup disaster on a kitchen install Tuesday that cost me an extra day

I was fitting upper cabinets in a new build and bumped a fresh can of stain off my step ladder. It landed right on a brand new quartz countertop and splattered everywhere. Took me three hours and a special poultice to get the stain off without scratching the stone. The homeowner was watching the whole time and I could feel my face burning up. I ended up having to reschedule the rest of my week to get back on track. Has anyone else had a spill ruin a whole day like that?

Why does nobody talk about Blum soft-close hinges losing tension after a couple years?

I was swapping out some kitchen doors last week for a client in Arlington and noticed their 3 year old Blum hinges just weren't closing the same as new ones. The homeowner said they've had to adjust them twice already and they still sag. Meanwhile I've got 20 year old Amerock hinges in my own house that work fine. Is it just me or do these premium hinges actually wear out faster than standard ones? Anyone else notice a drop in performance after like 2 years of daily use on your own builds?

Just hit cabinet #50 for this year, not bad for a one-man shop

I was going through my order book yesterday and counted up. Fifty cabinets built and installed since January. That includes a mix of face frames and frameless. My goal was 40 for the year so I'm ahead of schedule. I guess the late nights are actually paying off. Anyone else track their numbers like this or am I just weird?

Hot take: I wrecked a sheet of cherry plywood with one dumb move

Last Tuesday I was cutting a cabinet carcass on my table saw in the garage. Got distracted by my phone ringing and forgot to check my fence alignment before the cut. Ended up with a 3 foot piece that was 1/8 inch off on one side and totally ruined the whole sheet. That $120 mistake taught me to shut off my ringer and double check measurements every single time. Anyone else have a moment where a simple distraction cost them big?

Tried an antique handplane on a maple drawer front

Picked up a beat up Stanley #4 at an estate sale for $10. Took it apart, flattened the sole, sharpened the iron for 45 minutes until it shaved hair. First pass cut so smooth I didn't even need sandpaper. Anyone else ditch the sanders for old steel sometimes?

Just had a drawer slide fail on an 8 year old kitchen I built

Went back to a customer's house last week to fix a drawer that stopped rolling smooth. Thought it was maybe some debris or a loose screw. Pulled the drawer out and the ball bearing cage on a $12 pair of slides had just given up. Plastic parts cracked and bearings all over the floor. I put those in when I was still using the cheap bulk slides from the big box store to save $4 a set. Customer wasn't mad but I felt bad. Replaced them with a $28 pair of soft close slides from a real supplier and it took me 45 minutes total. Has anyone else had a budget slide fail years down the line or am I just unlucky?

Just read that plywood with more than 5 plys is actually weaker in some situations - any truth to this?

I was looking at some construction specs from the APA and found a detail saying that standard 3/4" plywood with 13 plys can have lower shear strength than 7-ply stuff depending on the glue type. Has anyone else run into this or am I reading that chart wrong?

Old timer told me to stop using my random orbit sander on face frames and switch to a square pad sander

He said it would cut down my sanding time by half after I spent 3 hours on a single kitchen last week, and honestly he was right because the edges came out way cleaner and I didn't burn through any veneer, has anyone else had a similar experience making that swap?

I think solid wood doors age better than the popular MDF ones people push now

After 8 years in my own kitchen, my MDF cabinet doors started swelling near the sink, while the solid oak ones I built for my neighbor still look sharp. Anyone else notice MDF just can't handle humidity over time?

I was at a job in Phoenix last month putting the finishing touches on a kitchen remodel when the guy points to his bathroom and says 'since you're here, can you straighten the toilet?' That time I tried to use a biscuit joiner with zero sleep

Last Tuesday I was finishing up a kitchen job in Tacoma and I was SO tired I forgot to set the fence depth. I plunged that thing right into my workpiece and it shot a biscuit clean across the shop. It hit my coffee mug and shattered it. Now I keep a Post-It on my joiner that says "check depth dummy." Has anyone else had a tool mishap because you were running on fumes?

Vent: That talk with a retired cabinetmaker shook me up

I was talking to this old guy named Pete at the lumberyard in Portland last week. He said he never uses pocket screws for face frames because they 'cheapen the build' and make it harder to fix later. Now I'm sitting here looking at my last 3 jobs wondering if I been cutting corners without realizing it. Anyone else hear something that made you rethink your whole process?

Had a hinge setback on a kitchen job last Wednesday

I was installing 20 Blum soft-close hinges on some new shaker doors. Thought I had the screw depth dialed in, but 3 of them stripped out in the particle board. Ended up having to glue in some toothpicks and redrill. Cost me an extra hour. I always use the same screws that come with the hinges. Anybody else run into this with newer cabinet boxes?

Wasted $200 on a cheap drum sander that couldn't even level a cutting board

Bought one of those off brand drum sanders from Amazon a few months back. Thought I was being smart saving some cash. First time I ran a piece of maple through it the drum wobbled so bad it left gouges deep enough you could feel them with your finger. Tried adjusting it for an hour, gave up. Now it's sitting in my garage taking up space. Anyone else get burned by cheap sanding gear or am I the only sucker here?

TIL a client's feedback made me rethink my whole approach to edge banding...

I was finishing up a set of custom shelves for a lady in Portland last month and she pointed out a tiny gap where the banding met at a corner... said it reminded her of her dad's old workbench from the 70s. She wasn't mad, just mentioned it like it was a normal thing, but it stuck with me all week. How do you guys handle those corner joints on iron-on banding without it looking like a afterthought?

Showerthought: I was fighting with a drawer slide for an hour before I tried a different order

I was putting a full extension slide on a tall dresser, and the drawer kept binding when I closed it. I had already mounted the slide to the cabinet side, like the instructions said. Out of frustration, I attached the slide to the drawer box first instead, then held the whole thing up to the opening. It lined up perfectly on the first try. I guess the extra weight of the drawer let it hang true while I marked the holes. Has anyone else found that flipping the install steps works better for certain slides?

Rant: Bought a 'pro' grade biscuit joiner that was a total waste of money

I dropped almost $400 on a new biscuit joiner last month, thinking it would be a solid upgrade for my shop. The brand had a good name, and the specs looked great online. The second I tried to use it on a maple face frame, the fence wouldn't lock square. I checked it with a precision square, and it was off by a solid 3 degrees. Tried adjusting it, but the locking mechanism felt cheap and slipped every time. I wasted a whole afternoon and ruined two good boards trying to make it work before I gave up. Called the company, and they said I could send it in for repair, but that would take weeks. Ended up just returning it and going back to my old, trusty model. Has anyone else had a major tool let them down right out of the box? What did you do?

Heard a guy at the lumber yard say he never uses a story stick anymore

I was picking up some maple for a kitchen job yesterday and overheard this older guy telling the yard guy he just uses his tape measure for everything now, that story sticks are old school. I mean, I get it, tapes are fast. But it got me thinking about this built-in I did about six months ago. I rushed it and just measured each cabinet opening with my tape. When I went to install, nothing lined up right because of a tiny bow in the wall I missed. Had to spend a whole afternoon shimming and trimming. If I'd taken the twenty minutes to make a story stick of that wall run, I would have caught it in the shop. Maybe it's just me, but that little stick of wood with all the marks saves me more headaches than anything. Do you guys still use them for big runs, or am I being too careful?
