Switched from a cheap Coleman stove to a MSR WhisperLite after one trip in the rain

The WhisperLite is solid but honestly it's not that great in heavy wind. The open flame design is its weak point. I had one flare out on me above treeline in the Winds last fall, had to huddle behind a rock to get it to stay lit. The Coleman you had was probably a green propane bottle model, those are notorious for losing pressure in the cold. The MSR will still put out good heat even down to freezing, but if wind is your main problem, look at a Jetboil or any canister stove with a built in regulator and a pot that wraps around the burner. The Windburner is pricey but I've used mine in 30 mph gusts and it still boiled water fine.

I finally compared PVA vs wheat paste on a rebinding job

Does the wheat paste hold up as well in humid weather though?

Hot take: my bone folder snapped on a simple fold last night

Never really rated metal folders before but now I'm seriously rethinking that, thanks.

Spent $75 on a fancy reading guide for our club and it was a total waste

Heard a podcast recently where they talked about how these premium guides are really just repackaged lit class homework from the 90s, nothing new under the sun. You could have spent that $75 on a stack of used books and got more actual conversation fuel. My buddy's group tried one of those "expert" guides for a Faulkner novel and it basically told them what they already figured out after the first chapter. The obvious questions are the killer though, when a guide asks something that flat it shuts down the whole room. Better off saving the cash and letting the group's own dumb arguments drive the discussion.

Chat with a pilot at the FBO in Boise got me thinking about our work

Ever had that feeling when you're just doing a normal task and the weight of it hits you? Like you're not just tightening a bolt, you're the last person to check the thing holding a wing on. That pilot is right. We sign off on work and that's it. Lives ride on our call. Makes you slow down and double check everything, you know?
