Found out my mortar mix was off by a weird stat I read online

I was looking up why my last wall had some cracks showing up after two weeks. Turns out I was using too much Portland cement in my mix. A bricklaying forum from 2019 said the ratio should be 1 part cement to 4 parts sand for most residential work. I had been doing almost 1 to 3 because I thought stronger was better. That extra cement makes the mortar too rigid and it can't handle movement. Now I'm redoing that section with the right mix. Has anyone else messed up their ratio and seen cracking later?

Switched from crimp connectors to solder for my last harness build

I always thought crimping was faster and just as reliable on small gauge wires. Then I had three pin connections fail in a row during a bench test on a King radio tray. Now I solder every signal wire after that experience, has anyone else run into intermittent crimp issues on thin gauge stuff?

That one client who cried during a facial still sticks with me months later

Had a woman in her late 50s come in last March for a basic hydrating facial, nothing crazy. Midway through the massage part she just starts tearing up, like silent crying. I froze for a second not going to lie, but I kept going and asked if she was okay. She said nobody had touched her face gently in over 10 years since her husband passed. That hit me way harder than I expected. I finished the service and we just sat there talking for like 20 minutes after. She booked another appointment for next month and asked if I could do the same thing again. Has anyone else had a client get emotional during a treatment like that?

I remember when 2FA meant a text message and nothing else

Back in 2014 I worked at a small office where the only security we had was a simple password that never changed. Then we got hit with a phishing attack that cost us about $3,000 in fake invoices. After that my boss finally let me set up two-factor authentication for everyone. At first people complained about the extra step but within a year it cut our security incidents down to zero. Now every site wants you to use an authenticator app or a hardware key and I think that's a good thing. Has anyone else seen their workplace push back on adding extra security layers?

I used to fix CRT TVs with a flashlight and a prayer

Back in the early 2000s, I had a shop in Columbus that was half CRT repairs. No service manuals for half of them, so I'd shine a flashlight through the vents to spot bulging caps or cold solder joints. Usually guessed right about 70% of the time. Now I just plug a scope in and check waveforms. Saves time but I miss the thrill of the blind fix. Anyone else ditch the old guesswork for proper tools?

Tried 4 different foam core brands for game inserts, one was way better

Last month I was making inserts for my copy of Terraforming Mars and went through like 4 different foam core brands from different craft stores. Elmer's from Joann was super soft and bent just from the box cutter pressure. The cheap stuff from Dollar Tree was even worse, kept crumbling on the edges. But the Grafix brand at Hobby Lobby held up way better, cuts clean and doesn't shred when you sand it. Has anyone else noticed big differences between foam core brands for this stuff?

Noticed a big difference in my crimps after switching to a ratchet tool

I used to just use a cheap pair of plier-style crimpers from the hardware store at JBG Aviation. After about 6 months of struggling with intermittent connections on D-sub pins, I tried a ratchet crimper from Daniels. The before and after on pull test results was night and day, I haven't had a single failure since. Has anyone else made that switch or found another tool that made a similar difference?

Storebought pie crust is better than homemade and I'll die on that hill

I tried making pie crust from scratch 3 times last month for a work potluck here in Nashville. First attempt was like chewing on a saltine cracker soaked in butter, second one somehow turned into a gluey mess that stuck to everything, and the third one came out looking like a topographical map of Tennessee with all the cracks. My grandma's recipe calls for ice water and a pastry cutter and all this careful folding nonsense. After 6 hours total across those 3 tries, I grabbed a box of Pillsbury for $3.50, rolled it out in 2 minutes, and my apple pie won second place at the shop. Everyone raved about the flaky crust not knowing it came from a box. Has anyone else just given up on the whole homemade pastry thing or is it just me?

TIL my sharpening stones were way dirtier than I thought

I kept wondering why my knives weren't getting as sharp after honing. Finally soaked my stones in dish soap for 20 minutes and scrubbed them with a stiff brush the gunk that came off was gross. Anyone else forget to deep clean their stones regularly?

Saw a guy yesterday using zip ties on aerial drops like it was 1995

...and honestly, that 5 month mark is almost exactly when zip ties start to fail in direct sunlight. The UV just eats them alive. I've seen guys use the black ones thinking they're tougher but they still get brittle after a few seasons. The real issue is even the heavy duty ones don't have the same tensile strength as a proper lashing, so they slowly stretch under the load. You ever try the stainless steel zip ties? I hear they hold up better but I never trusted them for anything permanent either.

Why do so many stylists still not section hair properly before coloring?

Gotta jump in here because what you said about showing clients the before photo is smart but I gotta gently point something out. Not everyone's hair needs a full four quadrant section job. I've seen stylists put a client through 20 clips when a simple two section part would've done the trick just fine. It's more about actually knowing where the scalp darkens and lightens naturally, not just going through the motions of clipping. Still totally agree most people skip basic steps they should have learned in year one though.

Just realized my garage shelf was slowly sagging for months

Honestly I used to think plywood was fine for everything but now I'm definitely overbuilding all my garage shelves after seeing that one sag lol. That 2x4 frame will hold up forever though.
