That basement waterproofing quote took me two weeks to verify

I got a quote for $12,000 to fix a small crack in my foundation wall. The contractor said I needed an interior drain system and a sump pump. I spent two weeks calling five different companies and watching foundation repair videos before I realized the crack just needed epoxy injection. The fix cost me $300 and took one afternoon. Has anyone else had contractors try to upsell them on major repairs that weren't needed?

And that roof guy probably threw in some "mold risk" to make it sound life or death right? Your story hits close to home because I had a plumber tell me my 20 year old water heater was "dangerously close to exploding" and I needed a whole new system for $4,500. I called a second plumber who laughed and said the pressure relief valve just needed replacing for $150. What tipped you off that the interior drain system was BS - was it the way they wouldn't let you think about it overnight or the "limited time discount" that always magically expires the next day?

Read a story about a guy who got quoted $8k for "urgent" roof work that was just missing shingles.

My last car repair quote had me ready to just start biking everywhere until a friend pointed out I can barely ride a bike without wobbling into a bush. The "urgent" tag on a $150 fix is basically the universal signal for "please overpay so I can afford a vacation." Learned that lesson the hard way and now I always grab a second opinion before my wallet gets scared into submission.
