inAm I the only one who thinks family recipes used to be more trusted than they are now?
Laughing at how people now treat recipes like secret government documents (my mom's meatloaf had zero classified ingredients, trust me). Oh, you posted a potato salad recipe? Get ready for the "but where did those potatoes COME FROM, Susan?" interrogation. I miss when the biggest controversy was whether you should use sweet or dill pickles in the mix. Now every comment section turns into a full blown CIA briefing about organic sourcing and farm-to-table conspiracies.

inCoal vs charcoal turned out to be a real thing
Wait so you're telling me the coal actually gave you cleaner welds too? That's wild because I always thought charcoal was supposed to be the "pure" option for blacksmithing, but when I switched over I noticed my steel was way less scaly and the heat stuck around longer in the center of the piece. What kind of coal were you using on that demo? I've heard the bituminous stuff with high sulfur can mess up your steel if you're not careful, but the anthracite I tried once was a total nightmare to light and never got hot enough for forge welding. Honestly makes me wonder if half the "technique problems" people post about in the smithing groups are just bad fuel choices nobody wants to admit to.

inMy brake cable snapped going down a steep hill last Tuesday
Jumped into this same rabbit hole last year (and promptly faceplanted, literally, because I forgot to check my housing). @nancy929 is totally right about the housing being the real culprit most times. I spent a whole afternoon replacing a "bad" cable on my old commuter, only to realize the housing was so crusted with gunk near the brake lever that it was basically sandpaper inside. Ended up just swapping both out together and it was like night and day. Makes me feel like an idiot for not checking that first, but hey, live and learn (and maybe buy a new set of housing cutters).

inThat $20 camp stove repair kit saved my whole trip
Totally grabbing one of those kits now, that's a lifesaver I never knew I needed.

inFound a way to clean heavy creosote without the nasty chemicals
@the_angela i've seen those dry ice videos too, they look wild but i bet it works. idk, I just use a really long handled brush and then tape a rag around the opening like you said. seems to catch most of the crud before it goes everywhere.
