My minimalist layout actually made me hate journaling for 2 months

I stripped my bullet journal down to just the basics last year, no trackers or collections at all. Honestly, I ended up with like 10 empty pages and zero motivation to open the thing every day. Did anyone else find that too much structure or too little both kill the habit?

Overheard a landlord say dishwasher pumps fail from food debris 90% of the time

I was at a supply shop in Portland last week and heard this property manager telling a newbie that most dishwasher calls are just clogged pumps from people not scraping plates. He said he saves hundreds a year by just cleaning the filter and pump on every service visit. Has anyone else found that simple step cuts down their callbacks a lot?

Just had a fender fall off mid test drive yesterday

I was taking a customer's 2013 Civic out after a quarter panel replacement on Highway 99 near Everett. Got up to about 55 mph and heard this loud pop then scraping. Pulled over and the whole passenger side fender was hanging by the inner liner. Had to call my buddy to bring zip ties and a ratchet strap so I could limp it back to the shop. Any of you ever had a panel let go on a road test like that?

Pro tip: I used to spend 20 minutes drawing a weekly spread with rulers and washi tape, but now I just scribble a list on scrap paper and call it done after realizing my perfectionism was eating up all my actual planning time, anyone else ditch the fancy layouts for something way more basic?

I switched last March after I spent an hour on a gorgeous February spread and then never opened that notebook again until April, what made you finally give up on the fancy stuff?

Had to choose between wood filler and spackle for a hole on my living room wall

I had this little nail hole (like 1/4 inch) from a picture frame I moved last week, and I stood in the hardware aisle at Lowe's for way too long trying to decide. Wood filler seemed too heavy and spackle felt more right for drywall, so I went with spackle - the pre-mixed tub kind for like $4. It worked fine, but it shrank a tiny bit after drying, so I had to do a second thin coat. Has anyone else found that spackle always needs two passes or am I just being impatient?

That old timer who told me my hammer swing was all wrong fixed my work in a day

I used to think I had a solid overhead swing, but a guy at the Bakersfield forge meetup pointed out I was holding my hammer too tight and using too much arm, not body. He said I was wasting 30% of my energy and ruining my control on hot steel. After one afternoon of focusing on a looser grip and more hip movement my welds stopped delaminating. Has anyone else had a simple form tweak change their whole workflow?

I used to just eyeball gaps on boiler tube spacers until a job in Gary showed me the truth

For years I'd set those tube gaps by feel and call it good, but after a tube failure last fall from a 1/8 inch misalignment I started using a feeler gauge every time. Has anyone else had a close call from skipping a measurement that seemed too small to matter?

Just realized I spent 3 hours fixing a monitor stand that cost $12

I bought this cheap monitor stand off Amazon to raise my screen up a bit. It wobbled like crazy from day one. I spent a whole Saturday trying to shim it with cardboard, then felt pads, then a cut-up yoga mat. None of that worked because the legs are just unevenly molded plastic. Finally I just took the thing off my desk and set my monitor on two old textbooks. It's rock solid now and I wish I did that from the start instead of wasting an afternoon on that wobbly stand. Has anyone else tossed a cheap Amazon stand and gone back to random books or blocks?

Just realized I've been taking phone photos wrong for 2 years - that YouTube guy tipped me off

So I was watching some random camera review channel while eating dinner last night, and the guy casually mentioned how most people hold their phone wrong for photos. He said you're supposed to tap to focus and then slide your finger up or down to adjust exposure. I've been taking pictures since I got my Pixel 6 in 2021 and never knew that. All those washed out outdoor shots and dark indoor ones could have been fixed with a simple swipe. Has anyone else missed this basic feature or am I the only one?

A customer told me my seams were too tight and I fought them on it for an hour

About 3 months ago I was doing this big living room in a house near Columbus and the homeowner kept saying my seams were too tight. I was like nah that's how you get them to lay flat and not show. But she was the client so I loosened them up a little on the next room and honestly they looked way better and laid down smoother. Has anyone else had a client point out something you thought was standard practice that turned out to actually be a good tip?
