Found out a 2019 anime poll had over 600,000 votes and the results still make no sense to me
I was reading a Japanese fan poll from a few years back and Dragon Ball's Goku came in like 5th place with over 40,000 votes, which felt weirdly low for such a huge series. I still don't get how Gintoki from Gintama beat out characters from way bigger shows, is that just a Japan thing?
Man, this is just how fan voting works everywhere and it never stops bugging me. It's like when you go to a restaurant and the thing everyone orders is not even close to the best dish on the menu, it's just the one that got popular first. Gintama fans in Japan are super loyal and they vote in packs, while Dragon Ball fans are all over the place and probably didn't even know the poll existed. Same reason your favorite local band sells out a small club but never charts. The biggest thing isn't always the thing people love the most, it's the thing the most organized fans care about at that exact moment.
