Hot take: My weekend job at a beachfront hotel had me laughing

Nah, I gotta disagree on this one. The image of a guy getting wrapped up in a drop cloth every time the doors open is pure comedy gold. Tourists snapping pics just adds to the whole absurdity of it. Sure, in the moment it's probably a pain, but stories like this are what make the job actually memorable. I bet you've got a dozen other funny ones from that same day.

Shoutout to that old mechanic at AutoZone who told me to stop using cheap oil filters

Buddy of mine ignored that same advice for years on his old Camry. Engine started knocking around 160k and when he finally pulled the valve cover it looked like a chocolate milkshake in there, total sludge disaster. Cost him a whole new motor.

That senior tech at O'Hare told me my DMM was lying to me, and he was right

It's like how people trust a car that starts fine but ignore a weird noise until it leaves them stranded. Easy to miss the real problems when you only check the obvious stuff.

Question about dealing with a subfloor that had a massive dip in it

Man, that's the story of my life with home repair. Seems like half the time I try to fix something simple it turns into a whole day project because of some hidden rule nobody told me about. Like painting - you think you can just slap on a thick coat to save time, but then it drips and takes twice as long to fix. Or caulking a tub, go too thick and it never dries right in the middle. Learned the hard way that thin layers work better for almost everything, leveler included.

First time I saw my own work from a customer's angle and it clicked

Oh man, that power stretcher tension is EVERYTHING. I had the same wakeup call a few years back when a customer called me back because a seam was lifting in a hallway. I realized I was half-assing the stretch because I was in a hurry. Now I spend that extra time cranking the stretcher until the carpet actually feels tight under my feet and I check the pins are biting deep. Makes a world of difference, and I haven't had a callback on a stretch job since.
