Old timer at the yard talked me out of buying a bigger pump

I was dead set on upgrading to a 12-inch pump for a job up near Sacramento. This guy Ed, been running dredges since the 70s, told me to stick with my 8-inch and just adjust my jetting. Figured he was just being old school, but I gave it a shot. Cut my fuel cost by about 30 percent on that two week job and still moved the same yardage. Any of you guys ever get talked out of a big purchase and end up better off?

Did you end up saving enough to cover that fuel cost difference? Sounds like Ed knew his stuff, that kind of advice is hard to come by these days. Glad it worked out for you.
