Rant: That one bottom bracket that took me 4 hours to remove

So I had this old Schwinn come into the shop last Tuesday, a 1980s model from a guy in Austin. The bottom bracket was so seized I spent 4 whole hours with a torch, a breaker bar, and even a pipe wrench... finally got it off by soaking it in PB Blaster overnight and using an impact driver. Has anyone else had a stubborn one that made you want to just throw the bike out the window?

Redecorated the living room 3 weeks ago and still staring at this giant blank wall above the couch

I thought I had it all planned out. Painted the room a nice light gray, got new furniture, even rearranged the layout. But that wall above the couch is still bare and it's driving me nuts. My sister said to just throw up a big mirror but I already have one in the hallway. I'm broke after the paint and couch so I can't drop like $200 on a huge canvas. Any cheap ideas that don't look trashy? Has anyone else dealt with this hangup after a redo?

That guy at the hardware store still bugs me

I was at Ace Hardware last Tuesday looking for a specific size o-ring for a faucet. This older guy in the plumbing aisle just walks up and says, "You know, you could just replace the whole cartridge for $4 more." I told him I just needed the o-ring, but he kept following me around pointing at different parts. He even grabbed my cart to show me a kit. It went on for like ten minutes until I just left without buying anything. Has anyone else had a random stranger at a store act like they know your project better than you do?

Had a disaster week with my pepper plants

Last June I was so proud of my balcony peppers. Then a heatwave hit and I lost 4 plants in 2 days. I used to think more sun was always better. My neighbor showed me how her shade cloth saved her tomatoes. Now I keep a 40% shade cloth ready for July. Anyone else get caught off guard by sudden heat on their balcony?

Swapped black mulch for brown and the difference was huge

I had cheap black mulch from the big box store for 2 years and it always looked dusty and fake. Switched to a natural brown cedar mulch from a local landscape supply for $3 more per bag and my whole front bed looks richer and more polished. Has anyone else noticed a big difference just from changing mulch color?

Vent: That dig in Turkey where they found a whole new layer under the 'final' floor

I was volunteering on a site near Antalya about three summers ago, and the lead archaeologist called it a day on a house ruin, saying the packed earth floor was the end. A grad student kept gently scraping one corner with a trowel for another hour and hit a different colored clay. It turned out to be a storage pit with intact pottery from a period we didn't even think was there. Now I never trust a 'clean' surface until I've checked every square inch myself. Has anyone else had a find that made them completely change their field method?

My kid's science book said yeast is alive and it blew my mind

I was helping with homework last night and the page showed yeast cells under a microscope, calling them 'tiny living organisms'. I always just thought of it as powder from a packet, but now I feel bad when my dough doesn't rise, like I'm failing these little guys lol. Does anyone else think about the yeast being alive when they bake?

Glued myself to the floor on a carpet install

So I was putting down carpet in a living room yesterday. I knocked over a full bucket of glue and didn't notice. When I went to adjust the carpet, I sat right in the sticky mess. I was stuck to the floor for like ten minutes before my helper showed up. He had to cut the carpet around me to get me free.

My new habit of adding a dash of lime to mortar has split our crew into two camps.

I say it makes the work easier, but the old guys say it's pointless with today's cement, so what do you think?
