I went with the cozy mystery because I was stressed about grading 60 essays, and honestly I just wanted something fun. By page 50 I'd already guessed the killer was the quiet librarian, and my book club was not impressed with my prediction.

My starter went bad after 3 days in the fridge - rookie mistake

I had this beautiful bubbly starter going for like 2 weeks. Fed it every 12 hours, it doubled in size no problem. Then I got busy and stuck it in the fridge thinking it would just chill out. 3 days later I pulled it out and it had this weird orangeish liquid on top and smelled like nail polish remover. Tried to feed it twice but it never came back. Had to dump the whole thing and start over. My buddy said I should have fed it before putting it in the fridge and left more headroom in the jar. Any tips for keeping a starter alive in the fridge longer?

Tried coworking at a library instead of a cafe in Lisbon last week

Hot take: store bought potting soil vs mixing your own on a balcony

I've been growing herbs and peppers on my tiny balcony in Chicago for about 2 years now and I'm convinced that bagged potting soil from the big box stores is a total scam for small space gardens. Last spring I used Miracle-Gro for my tomatoes and they got all leggy and the drainage was awful after a month of rain. So I tried mixing my own with 1 part peat moss, 1 part perlite, and 1 part compost from a local nursery and the difference was night and day. The roots exploded and I had cherry tomatoes by June instead of August. But here's the thing: mixing your own is messy and costs more upfront like $15 for the bagged stuff versus $25 for ingredients. Is it really worth the extra hassle for just a few pots? Has anyone else noticed their plants do way better with a custom mix or am I overthinking this whole thing?

Walking through the fabric district last week brought back memories

Went down to the fabric district in Los Angeles last Tuesday and it felt completely different than ten years ago. Half the little fabric shops I used to visit are gone, replaced by those giant wholesale places with everything in plastic wrap. I remember when you could dig through bins of vintage buttons and zippers for hours. Now it's mostly bulk orders and pre-made pattern kits. Found one old shop still open run by a woman who remembered my mom from the 90s. She said business dropped 60 percent since 2015 because everyone buys online. Anyone else feel like the hands-on part of fashion design is fading?

Appreciation post for password managers that DON'T force you into cloud sync

I was reading a blog post last week where the author claimed cloud-based password managers are the ONLY safe option, and it really rubbed me the wrong way. After having my LastPass account compromised in 2022, I switched to KeePass stored on a local flash drive and haven't looked back. Am I wrong for trusting a local file over something that lives on a server somewhere?

TIL I used 47 boxes in my last fort and never even counted before

I was cleaning out my garage after my kid's fort fell apart (the cat claimed it as a scratching post, RIP). Started tallying up the boxes I grabbed from work and neighbors over a few weeks. 47. Honestly surprised me because I usually just grab whatever looks good and don't think about it. Anyone else ever count how many boxes go into a decent sized fort?

Finally used the tile saw from our tool library today

I used to rent a wet saw from the big box store for every bathroom project, costing me $60 each time. But last month I joined our community tool library and borrowed their tile saw for free. It was a bit older than the rentals but cut perfectly fine. Have any of you found a tool at the library that saved you from buying or renting something expensive?

Thought fermented hot sauce was just a fad until I tried a 6 month aged batch

A buddy at the farmer's market forced me to taste his 8 month old habanero sauce and the depth of flavor was so good I had to start my own ferment the next day, anyone else get converted by a specific batch?
