That $60 classic everyone praises bored me to tears. Am I alone?

Finally read East of Eden last month since our club voted it in. Hated it. Page 340 and I still didn't care about anyone except maybe the hired hand. My buddy swears it's the great American novel. Told him I'd rather read the cereal box ingredients. Is it okay to admit a so-called masterpiece just doesn't land for you? Or am I clearly missing something? Has anyone else had a book club pick you wanted to toss out the window?
