PSA: Stop using WD-40 on your bike chain, saw a guy wreck his drivetrain at a local trailhead yesterday

My buddy Carl greased his chain with butter during a group ride and it snapped within two miles.

Got caught in a lightning storm on the JMT near Muir Pass last August

Whoa, that brings back some memories! I actually got caught in a crazy hailstorm a few years back while hiking in the Rockies, no aluminum poles thankfully but I had a thick sleeping pad in my pack. I used it as a seat and it actually helped a ton, kept the cold and buzz off the ground way better than just my rain pants. The crouch thing is real though, I tucked into a ball with my pack over my head and it made a huge difference, I swear the lightning felt less close even if it's just mental. My hands were still shaking from the adrenaline when it stopped, but I'd do it again if I had to.

Shoutout to the guy who proved chemtrails aren't real using just a coffee filter and rainwater

Why don't people just try the same test for themselves instead of buying into that blue water thing? It literally takes a coffee filter and a jar to see what's actually in your rainwater.

My $60 thermometer saved a brisket I was sure was ruined

Wait, you ever had a buddy who just refuses to buy a decent thermometer because "the built-in one is fine"? My friend Mike did that for years. He'd always get these dry or burnt briskets and blame it on the cut of meat or the weather or something. Last summer he finally borrowed my ThermoPro for a cookout and his built-in gauge was off by almost 50 degrees too. He was so mad at himself for all those wasted briskets over the years. He finally went out and bought a good one the next week. So yeah, I've seen more than one cook saved by a simple probe check.

Switched from crimp connectors to solder for my last harness build

That "personal vendetta" line hits close to home. I spent an entire weekend chasing an intermittent drop on a audio panel before finding a crimp that looked perfect but had the insulation caught in the barrel. Was that what you saw with yours where the pin looked fine but the wire slid out with a tug? I switched to a different brand of crimper after that and it got better, but never perfect. The really thin stuff just seems to have no margin for error.
