Why does nobody warn you about drywall dust getting into everything

I spent last Saturday sanding a 10x12 bedroom ceiling and somehow dust got into my fridge three rooms away. The HVAC kicked on mid project and now I'm finding fine white powder on my coffee mug a week later. How do you guys seal off a room for sanding without turning your whole house into a dust bowl?
