inThat time my rice cooker died mid-dinner on a Tuesday
Honestly I used to think people were overreacting when they talked about backup plans for stuff like this. Like just use a pot, how hard can it be? But when my instant pot crapped out on a Sunday and I had a pork shoulder half done, I learned real quick that improvisation is a whole skill. Your broth and butter trick is genius, I would've just added water and ended up with sad mush. Now I keep a cheap electric kettle around just in case, and I always have a plan B for any main cooking tool. It's wild how a $20 fix can save a whole night of stress and food.

inSleeping pad failed on night two in Big Bend
Wow, you went back to sleep on the hard ground after that? That sounds like a rough way to spend a night. I'd be tossing and turning the whole time worrying about my hips and back.

inThat week I tried to speed-read a 600 page novel for book club and it backfired completely
Started the book on Monday night" oh man I've been there lol. I once tried to cram Crime and Punishment in two days and showed up to my book club just describing the weather in St. Petersburg the whole time.
