Hot take: I let the quietest person in book club pick our next read and it broke the group
We usually vote on picks but 3 months ago I got tired of the same 4 people talking over everyone, so I handed the choice to Dana, who never says a word. She picked a 700 page book about salt mining and turnout dropped from 11 people to 4 by week two. Now half the group is mad at me and the other half wants Dana to pick again, so I guess my lesson is that silence does not mean good taste. How do you all handle the quiet members without turning the whole thing into a fight?
Ever notice how the quiet one always gets put on a pedestal like they're hiding some hidden wisdom, and then they turn out to just have weird taste? Same thing happens at work when the silent guy gets promoted for "listening" and then makes terrible calls. Maybe the move is to just rotate picks one by one so nobody gets crowned and nobody gets blamed.
