inOverheard a student say 'vintage just means old and ugly' at the library yesterday. Got me thinking about how we define value in design.
My buddy found this hideous lamp at a yard sale, right? His wife was gonna toss it, but it turned out to be some designer piece worth like two grand.

inRemember when we used to tap out a stripped bolt with a hammer and chisel?
My buddy Steve in Wichita had a similar thing happen with a shear bolt on a Piper gear strut. He tried the heat and quench method, but the metal just turned chalky and cracked. Ended up having to use a left hand drill bit and an easy out, and it still took him most of a day. He said it felt like the new alloy just doesn't have any give left in it.

inTIL that pressure washing my own driveway in Decatur was a bigger mistake than I thought
Oh man, that hits home. I tried to sand and refinish my own hardwood floors last year to save money. Rented a big drum sander, thought it looked easy enough. Ended up gouging huge dips in the middle of the living room because I held it in one spot too long. The fix was way worse than the original problem, had to hire a pro to basically start over. Felt like such a fool.

inHad a client last week who wanted a full inventory count done with a drone
Oh man, that's a classic. I read an article about a warehouse that tried using drones for stock checks and it was the same mess. The tech guys were all excited, but the people who actually do the counts said the drone kept missing items stacked in shadows or behind columns. It sounds smart until you realize a person with a clipboard can look under a shelf. Sometimes the simple way is the right way.

inMy buddy in Denver roasted my old way of testing wireless earbuds
Honestly, testing how they handle a quick grocery store chat. The mic quality when you're just grabbing milk is way different than a quiet room.
