Debate: did my alternator fail because of old age or my bad habit of letting the battery drain down to zero?

Last Tuesday in my driveway in Austin my 2010 Honda Civic died at a red light and I swapped the alternator myself for $120 but now I'm wondering if jumping it dead five times this year caused the failure or if 180k miles just caught up with it, what do you all think caused yours to go?

Countertop bokashi vs. electric composter: which one actually works in a small apartment?

I spent 4 months in a 500 sq ft studio in Chicago testing both a bokashi bucket and a Lomi electric composter. The bokashi handled more types of food waste like citrus and dairy, but it needed a special bin and soil for finishing. The Lomi was faster and less smelly, but it cost $400 and the end result was more like dry crumbs than real compost. Anyone else have a preference between these two approaches for apartment living?

Found out my grandma's sourdough starter is over 100 years old

I was cleaning out my grandma's old kitchen last weekend in Portland and found a jar in the back of her fridge with a note dated 1923. Turns out she got it from a neighbor who brought it over from Italy, and my family has been feeding it ever since without really telling anyone. I looked up how to test if it's still alive and after 3 feedings it's bubbling like crazy. Has anyone else stumbled on something like this from a relative?

That inspector told me I was greasing bearings wrong for 10 years

I was doing a wheel hub repack last week and an old inspector walked by my hangar at BWI. He watched me pack the bearing by hand and said I was doing it backwards the whole time. Apparently you need to force the grease through the cage from the back side, not just smear it on the rollers. I tried it and the bearing actually took twice as much grease. Has anyone else been shown a trick like that late in their career?

Unpopular opinion: chemtrails are just contrails but the government loves the confusion

I used to be all in on the chemtrail theory a few years back. I spent hours on forums tracking flight paths and noticing how some lines hung around for 20 minutes while others faded fast. Then I started reading up on how humidity and altitude actually change how contrails look, like at 35,000 feet a dry day makes them vanish in seconds. Now I think the government just lets people argue because it keeps us focused on the sky instead of stuff like FEMA camps or whatever. What changed it for me was watching a clear sky turn hazy after a bunch of planes passed over Ohio last summer - but that could just be weather. Anyone else flip flopped on this or still see chemicals dropping?

Tried a banjo sander instead of hand sanding for a whole room of butt joints

I spent last Saturday sanding a 12 x 14 bedroom ceiling and my shoulders were screaming after 45 minutes with a pole sander (you know how that goes). A buddy loaned me his Festool Rotex with a mesh pad and I finished the whole ceiling in under an hour with zero dust in my eyes. Has anyone else found a tool that completely changed how they do finish sanding?

Spent $40 on a Python course and it actually saved me 10 hours of headache

I was trying to build a simple web scraper for work using random YouTube tutorials and kept hitting errors. After three days of frustration I bought a Udemy course on web scraping with Python for $40. It walked me through debugging step by step and showed me how to handle messy HTML. Now I actually understand what I'm doing instead of just copying code. Has anyone else had good luck with paid courses over free stuff?

Discovered a trick for stubborn tub stoppers after 2 hours of frustration

I spent forever trying to pull out a pop-up tub stopper that was stuck closed, using pliers and even a screwdriver. Then I read that pouring boiling water down the overflow plate for a minute loosens the mineral buildup around the spring. Has anyone else tried heat on plumbing parts or do you think that risks damaging the pipes?

Tried truing a wheel on a park stand and nearly threw the whole thing into a ditch

I was fixing a wobbly rear wheel on my gravel bike last Saturday in my garage, and the spoke tension was so off I kept overtightening then loosening, and after 45 minutes the wheel was somehow wobbling worse than before I started - has anyone else had a wheel that just fights back no matter what you do?

Wasted $200 on cheap laminate flooring and regret it

So I thought I was being smart buying those $1 a square foot planks from the big box store. After 8 months the edges are chipping and the surface is scratched just from my cat walking on it. Should have just saved up for the mid-grade stuff for $3 a foot. Anyone else fall for the bargain flooring trap?

Hit 50 game nights in a row with my group last Saturday, never thought we'd make it

Oh ABSOLUTELY some of those nights ended in chaos. The time someone tried to trade wheat for sheep during a drought in Catan and the other person LITERALLY flipped the board. But honestly, @miaa41 what I really want to know is how many of those 50 game nights had someone show up with an EXPANSION PACK they insisted on playing that nobody else knew the rules for? Because that's always the real test of a group's patience. I bet at least 10 of those nights started with someone pulling out Carcassonne expansions and everyone else just staring at each other.

A collector at a con told me my bag and board setup was ruining my comics

Start flipping through your books regularly even if you think they're stored fine. I had a run of Amazing Spider-Man that looked perfect for years until I noticed the bottom corners were slowly curling from humidity in my basement. Got a cheap dehumidifier and now I check my long boxes every season. Paper is weird - it can be doing fine today and wrecked tomorrow without you touching it.

Fixed a squeaky door for 6 months before I realized I was lubing the wrong part

My old Jeep was exactly the same way. I spent a whole afternoon cleaning battery terminals once and it still wouldn't start, then my neighbor came over and just wiggled a loose wire near the fuse box and it fired right up. That's when I started keeping a list of all the little weird things my truck does so I don't just jump at the obvious fix anymore.
