Update: my garage door opener started acting weird right after the power company installed a smart meter

Smart meters are known to mess with old electronics.

My chain snapped on the way home last Thursday

Welcome to the club, man. I had a chain snap on me last year right at the bottom of a big hill, so I got to walk up it in cycling shoes. The real kicker was I had just bragged to my buddy about how long my chains usually last. Felt like the bike gods heard me and decided to teach a lesson. Six months is pretty rough though, maybe you just got a Friday afternoon special from the factory.

Used to think quenching in used motor oil was fine until a smith in Boise showed me his cracked leaf spring project.

Honestly mason.margaret, Parks 50 is solid for a lot of steels, but it can be too harsh on 5160 if you're not careful. I've seen it cause tiny cracks right at the edge, especially on thinner blades. For 5160, I usually go with a slower oil like AAA. It still gets it hard, but it cools it down just enough to avoid those problems. The last thing you want is a blade that looks perfect but fails later because the quench was too fast.

Had a real fight with a stuck hatch on a sunken barge near Galveston

That just makes a fizzy mess, not a cleaner.

Showerthought: I spent 4 hours looking for a coolant leak that turned out to be a single cracked O-ring on a heater hose fitting.

Buddy of mine lost a whole weekend to a bad injector cup seal. Thing was the size of a dime.
