My cheap $15 bin from Target lasted just about as long as yours did, and the smell when the lid snapped was something else. I think these cheaper bins are just made to break after a few months, it's basically a waste of money. For my next one I’m thinking of just using a plain glass jar with a screw lid, at least that won't fall apart.
