inHonestly, keeping a magnet in my field bag let me spot magnetite right away.
That magnet in the field bag idea always made me smirk. I thought it was extra work for no real gain. Then I actually brought one on a trip and stuck it in some soil. Pulled up a chunk of magnetite I had walked right past. Changed my whole view on carrying a little magnet around. Now I'm a believer, simple as that.

inPro tip: Giving green tech more time to grow saves trouble later
Totally get where you're coming from. Look at some early electric car batteries that died way too fast, creating a ton of nasty waste. Rushing stuff out the door means we end up throwing away a lot of broken tech, which kinda ruins the whole point. Letting engineers solve these big problems properly means the next wave of solar panels or heat pumps will actually last a lifetime. Doing it right is way better than doing it twice.

inTbh, my fix for a ghost shift on climbs was simpler than I thought
Hold up, are you serious that a little bend in the derailleur hanger leads to shifting under load? @the_alice, that explains so many frustrating rides I've had. I always blamed my cables or even the derailleur itself. Now I'm wondering if my hanger has been off this whole time. What tool do you use for checking alignment, and is it easy for a home mechanic?

inShowerthought: Riding the bus to nearby towns changed my idea of a vacation
Sounds more like a chore than a vacation to me.

inWhy does nobody talk about pricing repairs for your own family?
I used to always fix stuff for free too, until my cousin's constant "quick questions" turned into weekly support calls. That line about your aunt getting upset at a small fee hits home. I started saying "parts cost X, I don't charge for my time" as a compromise. It sets a boundary so they see it as a real service, not just you messing around. Changed everything for me.
