That magnet in the field bag idea always made me smirk. I thought it was extra work for no real gain. Then I actually brought one on a trip and stuck it in some soil. Pulled up a chunk of magnetite I had walked right past. Changed my whole view on carrying a little magnet around. Now I'm a believer, simple as that.
