Tbh, my fix for a ghost shift on climbs was simpler than I thought

Honestly, I was sure the rear derailleur needed a full adjust after every steep hill. Ngl, just indexing the cable tension one click tighter made it perfect. What's your quick fix for mystery shifts under load?

Yeah, that one-click cable fix is often all it takes. Had the same thing happen last season on a long climb. @joseph662, if that doesn't hold, get the hanger checked. My local shop spotted a tiny bend I couldn't even see, and that was the real culprit for the ghost shifts under power. Felt like a new bike after they straightened it.

That cable tension tweak is often the first place to look. Been there for sure. If a quick barrel adjust doesn't settle it down, a slightly bent derailleur hanger is usually the next suspect. It doesn't take much of a bend to cause those weird load-based shifts. A simple alignment check with a tool has saved me a ton of grief before. It's worth looking at if the cable fix only partly works.

Hold up, are you serious that a little bend in the derailleur hanger leads to shifting under load? @the_alice, that explains so many frustrating rides I've had. I always blamed my cables or even the derailleur itself. Now I'm wondering if my hanger has been off this whole time. What tool do you use for checking alignment, and is it easy for a home mechanic?
