Had a talk with my neighbor that made me rethink cheap chains

My neighbor Bill, who's been building bikes since the 70s, told me I'm wasting money on those $10 chains from the hardware store because they stretch out in 200 miles. He showed me his 15 year old Shimano chain that still measures perfect with a chain checker tool, and now I feel dumb for buying 4 cheap ones this year alone. Am I really saving money if I'm replacing a chain every 3 months instead of every 3 years?

Had a pigeon kamikaze into my bike basket at 7am this morning

I was cruising down Oak Street near the donut shop, smooth commute going, when this pigeon just drops out of nowhere and lands right in my front basket. It sat there looking confused for a solid 5 blocks before it flew off. I was so startled I almost hit a curb. Anyone else get attacked by wildlife on their morning ride?

Rolled the dice on a $15 soldering iron from Harbor Freight...

My lamp flex broke right at the base and I figured I'd either fix it or junk it, so I grabbed that cheapo iron on a whim. It actually held enough heat to sweat the joint clean and I got the wire reconnected in about 8 minutes flat. Has anyone else gotten decent results out of a tool you were sure would be garbage?

My old boss swore by a 6-inch putty knife for tucking carpet at walls

I worked for this guy back in 2006 in Des Moines and he'd say never use a stair tool for the final tuck, only a putty knife. Said it gave a cleaner line and wouldn't tear the backing. I thought he was crazy because everyone else I knew used a stair tool or a knee kicker. But I tried it on a tricky bedroom install with some berber that kept fraying. The putty knife actually slid in smooth and left a edge that looked like it was painted on. I still use that trick today on any stretch-in job, especially if the walls are uneven. Has anyone else gotten old school advice that actually worked better than the modern tools?

I was working on a boiler at a grain elevator east of Sioux Falls. The steam pressure kept dropping about 3 psi every 6 hours, and I chased it through every valve and fitting. Checked the gaskets, the relief valve, even pulled the sight glass. On day 4 I finally noticed a tiny weep around a 3/4 inch bolt on the manway door. Quarter turn with a wrench and it held steady since. Has anyone else had a leak hide in plain sight like that?

Had the worst shift ever at the shop last Thursday - three major chain failures in one day

So last Thursday was just a total nightmare at the bike shop I work at here in Portland. First thing in the morning, a guy rolls in with a chain snapped clean in half mid-ride on a brand new gravel bike he just got from us two weeks ago. Then around lunch, another customer comes back furious because his e-bike chain stretched out and derailed on his commute after only like 60 miles. And to top it off, a kid brought in his mountain bike with a chain so rusted and twisted it looked like it had been underwater for months. I spent the whole day re-routing drivetrains and replacing chains instead of doing any real diagnostics or builds. Has anyone else had a day where the chain gods just cursed you with back-to-back failures like that?

I had this job over in Oakdale last month where I ran all the wires behind this big residential panel. Customer walks in while I'm finishing up and says 'man, that looks like my kid's art project back there.' Felt a little burned at first but I looked at it again and she was right. Now I spend an extra 10 minutes per job using those little wire keepers to bundle things clean. Has anyone else had a customer turn out to be your best quality control?
