inGot chewed out by a retired patternmaker for my sprue placement on a 50-lb aluminum job last month.
Wait, isn't that more about reducing turbulence than just cooling? The angled gate lets the metal flow in calmly so it doesn't trap air from the start. Getting the fill right seems like the main win, with less cooling issues as a bonus.

inThat job at the old farm in Lancaster made me rethink post hole diggers
Wait, hold on, you hit rocks with a manual auger and you're still walking? My uncle tried that once on his property and it just about threw him down the hill (he had the bruises for weeks). That gas one sounds like a lifesaver for a job like that, even with the racket it makes. I'd say the power tool wins when the ground fights back.

inI used to laugh at the guys who swore by those laser levels
Oh man, "hanging doors by myself" is the PERFECT example. I had the exact same wake up call trying to install a stupid pre-hung closet door. Nothing lines up, you need three hands, and the hinge pins are impossible. I went from "how hard can it be" to covered in sweat and calling a friend in under an hour. Some jobs just NEED two people.

inThat satisfying moment when a cover sits just right...
The trick is to never cut the cover board by itself. Always glue your book cloth or paper to the larger sheet first, let it dry completely under weight, and then trim the whole thing to size. That way any tiny shift happens in the waste area, not on your final edge. A metal ruler and a fresh blade for each big project are non-negotiable. The board soaks up glue and dulls the edge fast. For anything over A4, I work on a huge self-healing mat and use a carpenter's square to check my corners.

inI finally dug out my original alarm testing gear from the garage
I read an article last month about some telecom techs who still keep their old butt sets for troubleshooting. They said the new digital testers can glitch in ways the simple analog gear never did. Sometimes the old heavy stuff just worked when you needed it to.
