Neighbor told me I was painting my fence wrong

He said I needed to backbrush after rolling, not just lay it on thick. Tried it on the back section last weekend and it actually soaked in way better with no drips. Anybody else get a tip from a nosy neighbor that turned out to be good?

Tried reading a 'classic' on a road trip and it backfired big time

So last month I decided to finally read Moby Dick during a 10 hour drive from Austin to Amarillo. I figured, hey, it's a classic, I'll look smart at book club. By hour three I was fighting to stay awake with all the whale blubber details. My buddy in the passenger seat started reading over my shoulder and fell asleep too. We missed the exit for a rest stop because we were both zoning out. When I got to book club, I couldn't even explain the plot because I'd skimmed half the chapters. Has anyone else picked the wrong book for a road trip and regretted it?

That time I spent 3 hours trying to figure out one rule in Arkham Horror

I got the big box of Arkham Horror out last Saturday night, all pumped for a game. Spent maybe 90 minutes setting up tokens and reading through the rulebook again. Then I hit this weird thing about monster movement during the mythos phase, just couldn't wrap my head around it. Wound up digging through forums on my phone for another hour and a half, and finally found a post from like 2017 that explained it. So yeah, setup plus one rule took me almost 3 hours before we even drew a card. Has anyone else spent way too long on a single confusing rule in a complex game?

Took a wrong turn on a hike and found my favorite spot in the woods

Last Saturday I was out near the Chipola River trail and decided to skip the marked path to follow this little creek I heard. I figured I'd just loop back in 10 minutes but the ground got muddy and I slid down a small embankment. Ended up in this clearing with mossy rocks and sunlight coming through the trees like a spotlight. No sign of anyone else for like an hour. I sat there listening to the water and realized I'd been stressing over nothing at work all week. Now I'm wondering if you all ever had a time where messing up actually led to something better? What's your story with getting lost?

I finally switched from wire-brushing my boiler tubes to using a dry ice blaster

An old-timer at the union hall said the wire brush was just pushing soot deeper into the metal, so I tried a dry ice blaster on a job last month and it cut my cleanup time in half with way less mess, anyone else made the switch or still sticking with the old way?

That old Nintendo I found at a garage sale finally works again

I picked up a beat up NES from a garage sale for $10 last month and it wouldn't read any games at all. After watching a few videos I tried the boiling water trick on the 72 pin connector and it actually worked perfectly. Has anyone else had luck with that method or is there a better way to keep it working long term?

Just realized I've mixed over 500 custom stain matches

I was cleaning out my sample boards and counted them all. It hit me how much of this job is just eyeballing color and remembering formulas. How do you guys keep track of your recipes so you can repeat them later?

I keep seeing new drafters skip the step of checking their own scale before sending a file. It mattered because our plotter would eat an entire D-size sheet if the scale was off by a tenth. How do you all double-check your work now?

We had to pick between a new CRM or a custom database for our 12-person team

Our old system was just a bunch of spreadsheets and it was a mess. The choice came down to buying a ready-made CRM for $80 per user each month or building a custom database with a local developer. We went with the custom option, thinking it would fit our exact workflow. It's been six months and we're still working out bugs, which is really slowing down our sales process. Has anyone else gone the custom route and found a good way to speed up the testing phase?

Shoutout to the old timer who saved my week with a 1/4 inch end mill

I was running a big aluminum job last Thursday and my last good 3/8 inch tool snapped, leaving me stuck with a machine down. This retired guy, Frank, who still hangs around the shop, saw me panicking and dug out a box of 1/4 inch end mills from the back, saying "Kid, just slow the feed and take three passes." It worked perfectly and got the order out the door. Anyone have a go-to move for when your main tool goes down mid-job?
