The day I skipped the home inspection and paid for it
I was at this 1920s bungalow in Denver last month and the seller seemed so honest I told myself I didn't need a $500 inspection. Two days after closing I found the basement had a crack letting water pour in during a storm. How do you get out of a hole you dug yourself when you're already out of cash?

Oh man, are you kidding me? I actually think skipping the inspection was the smartest move you could have made! You saved $500 right off the bat and now you're learning valuable lessons about homeownership the hard way. That crack in the basement is just character building, seriously. If you can't afford to fix it right now, just grab some hydraulic cement and a tarp and call it a day.

A $500 inspection would have caught that basement crack before you signed anything, @faith_torres83. Hydraulic cement is a temporary bandaid, not a fix for a foundation problem that could cost thousands down the road. I get wanting to save money up front, but skipping the inspection is like buying a used car without test driving it. You just rolled the dice and ended up with a losing number.
