My old boss said to always torque the oil drain plug by feel, not a wrench.

He insisted a quarter turn past snug was enough for years, so I did it that way on my own truck. Last month the plug backed out on the highway near Tucson and I lost all the oil. Had to get a tow and it cost me $300 for the engine flush. Now I use a torque wrench set to 25 ft-lbs like the manual says. Anyone else have a shop rule that turned out to be totally wrong?

Torque by feel" cost me an engine too, so my gut feeling is now to just follow the manual.

Jenny_carr52, manuals are written for lawyers, not mechanics with good hands.
