Threw away $80 on a handyman who didn't show up twice

I hired a guy off Nextdoor to fix a leaky pipe under my kitchen sink in Decatur. He said $80 flat rate and he'd come last Tuesday. I took the day off work and he never showed. He texted saying he got stuck on another job, so I rescheduled for Friday. Friday comes and nothing, no call no text. I blocked him and learned my lesson to never pay upfront for a handyman again. Anyone else get ghosted by a local service person here?

Honestly I used to be the person who thought upfront payment was no big deal, that it just showed good faith. But then I paid a guy $50 to fix a broken window latch and he ghosted me three different times before I finally just called it a loss. It really changed my view because I figured most people are honest, but now I realize there are too many people out there who will take your money and run. I only pay after the work is done now, no exceptions. It sucks that a few bad apples ruin it for the rest, but it is what it is.

Fair enough @clairebaker, I hear you on getting burned. But playing devil's advocate here: if everyone demands payment after the job, honest folks like plumbers who buy parts upfront are basically fronting the cost for you. Hard to blame them for asking for a deposit when they're out $50 in materials before they even start.
