That week my AC died in August and four contractors gave me quotes from $600 to $4,200

Three weeks ago my unit started blowing hot air on a Tuesday. I called five HVAC places around Atlanta and only two actually showed up to look at it. One guy said I needed a whole new system for $4,200, but the next guy fixed a capacitor for $180 and it's been running fine since. Has anyone else had contractors try to upsell them hard like that?

Whoa, $4,200 for a whole system when it was just a $180 part?

oh man i've been there lol. that's the classic "dealership tax" on everything they touch. they quoted me $3800 for a radiator replacement on an old civic once, and i found the exact part online for $150 and did it in my driveway in an afternoon with a socket set and some youtube videos. they'll always try to upsell you on the "we gotta flush the whole system" or "our labor rate is $200 an hour so it adds up fast" but it's just crazy how they'll charge you 20x the part cost for something that takes a couple hours tops. gotta love the markups on little stuff like thermostats and alternators too, it's wild.
