That chlorine is no joke. My neighbor tried making kombucha with straight tap water and it just sat there like a sad, flat soda. Switched to filtered and it was bubbling like crazy in two days.

Muscle memory is a stubborn thing, right? You've probably wired a thousand jacks with your own special method. At this point, calling it 'wrong' is just a matter of opinion. If the phones still ring, you built a functional system. Maybe the 1920s house was judging your technique.
