Fume fight in our foundry: Splurge on duct systems or make do with open doors?
Last Tuesday, a big aluminum melt filled the shop with thick smoke, and now everyone's arguing over the fix. Half the team wants to drop cash on a full duct and fan setup to suck out ALL the bad air. The other half says just propping the rear doors wide and using a couple box fans is enough and keeps costs down. I've seen both ways, and those duct systems really CLEAR the room fast but cost a ton to put in. With the door method, you rely on the wind and end up freezing in winter. My eyes sting thinking about another smoky day, but the boss worries about the bill. Where do you stand? Is expensive ventilation worth it or just a nice extra?
