Thought eco mode was just a gimmick, but it CUT my energy use by 30%.

Hang on, that 30% number really depends on what you're running. Eco mode on a laptop or game console won't touch your home's big energy users like the HVAC or water heater. It works best for things that are always on standby, like a TV or printer. My old fridge had an eco setting that did nothing because the seals were shot. You gotta check the actual device and how you use it. For some stuff it's a real help, for others it's just a light on the dashboard.

Oh man, that hits home. I got a "smart" thermostat with an eco setting that was supposed to learn my schedule. It decided the most eco friendly thing was to turn the AC off completely every night, so I'd wake up sweating. My electric bill went UP that month trying to cool the house back down every morning. Felt like the biggest sucker paying for that "feature.
