My professor said to never use more than two fonts, but my best work broke that rule

In my senior design class, Professor Davis told us, 'Stick to two typefaces, max, or your work will look messy.' I followed that for a year until a music festival poster job last month. The client wanted a wild, layered look, so I used four different fonts. That poster got me three new clients who loved the energy. Has anyone else found a strict design rule that just didn't fit the project?

Rules are just training wheels for beginners, and real creativity starts when you know how to throw them out the window.

Totally get that. I had a branding teacher who was obsessed with perfect alignment on everything. Then I worked on this indie zine project where the whole vibe was chaotic and off kilter. We broke the grid completely, and it just clicked for that audience. Sometimes the project needs to break the rules to feel right.
